Letters to the editor ASWSC needs organized advertising " Dear Editor, On October 24, Dr. Handleys' 8 a.m. Management Concepts class was chosen to be surveyed by the College Activities Board. The purpose of this survey was to ascertain why students have not (1) supported any of the activities planned and (2) which activities the students would support if given the opportunity. The reason students gave for lack of support of the extracurricular activities was inefficient advertising. One prime example of inefficient or unorganized advertising was given on Oct. 25, concerning the appearance of Ralph Nader. All advertisements issued by the school stated, "Convocation; Ralph Nader. .- Published twice weekly by the Media Board of Weber State College during fall, winter and spring auarters. On the morning of the 25th, a local radio station announced, "Ralph Nader will be speaking in the Browning Center on the WSC Campus at 10:30 today." News on the hour every hour, "Nader speaks today at 10:30 a.m." This is just one example of unorganized advertising. How many people are going to be frustrated and turned away from activities by such obvious 'bloopers'? I suggest CAB work closer with the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations to form more uniformity in advertising. It is very frustrating for CAB to plan activities and recieve little support from Signpost 15 JACK . students and community. We cannot support or be proud of a confused system. The college will not gain national recognition or support if we students do not respect and support our school activities. Thank you Kathleen R. This letter is in response to the editorial of Oct. 19 concerning homesexuality. Homesexuals are people. But they are misguided in that the government rejects them rights when in reality, they deny their own rights. The acts of homesexuality to them may seem a wonderful thing, but actually seems to mock the fabric of what it is to be human, and the concept of the family which is the heart of not only America, but the world. They deny themselves their rights by denying their freedom to do good for society. It seems to me that their motives for rights and the amount of yelling that they do about it is nothing more than a selfish desire to make a practice Where did millions of Cambodians go? By John Redding Approximately six million people are "missing," presumed dead. That may sound a sweeping claim, but it is true. The reports coming from Cambodia border on something unimaginable: a human catastrophe and crime without measure. For even the horror of Hitler's war crimes did not include the enslavement of an entire civilian population and the systematic slaughter of all. In 1975 Cambodia's population was roughly seven million. Today nearly three-fourths of them gone! Young adults between the ages of 17 to 35 are difficult to find; a generation has vanished from the face of the earth. Cambodia is now a nation comprised mostly of children and very old people separated from the rest of the world and facing death by starvation on a scale never before seen by the world. Who is responsible for this? How could such a crime against human dignity happen? War in Southeast Asia A brief tour into America's recent history can easily point to the answers. During the mid 1970's, the tranquility and beauty of Cambodia ended with the greatest saturation of bombing in history. President Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger launched their "secret war" in violation of American Constitutional law and in defiance of Congress". For the three years it was taking place the American public knew nothing about it. By the time it was over the equivalent of five Hiroshimas, in tons of bombs, had fallen on Cambodia. The horrors that followed in the coming years rip at every fiber of dignity and justice. Reporter John Pilger and photographer Eric Piper from the 'London Daily Mirror have documented evidence which should shake the earth. The scenes which these journalists have recorded include excavated trenches, near the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, crammed with skeletons, with evidence of terrible head wounds: "the hammer being the most common instrument of death." Their murderers were the that has leveled nations to the ground in centuries past a thine of common acceptance. America was founded UDon the principles of freedom to choose in a manner that would hp beneficial to the advancement of men and women. Freedom is the ability to choose principles that will benefit mankind and cause an instilled desire to be better than the person was before. But when choices are made that cause us to retrogress from rather than progress toward ideals and knowledge of truths - and the power to live it, then we J i- . mvnc a lauiu corruDllon arm disintegration in a civilization that was several thousands years in the making. It is like the time it takes to destroy a majestic redwood which was growing for centuries. October 30, J 979 genocidal maniacs of the Khmer Rouge who entered the capital of Cambodia in 1975. Since their reign of terror innocent people have been forced from their homes to work in rice fields 24 hours a day or be beaten and tortured to death. A former school was named the "Tuol Sleng extermination centre." According to reports, it, like Auschwitz, has a fence of double barbed wire around it, and resembles the infamous death camp too closely. Like the victims of Auschwitz, the prisoners reportedly arrived by train, 150 to a car, and the weak died quickly. Khmer Rouge Camp The Khmer Rouge ran the camp with a gestapo called "S21" along with an "interrogation unit," and a "torture and massacre acre unit." Some 12,000 people died slow deaths between December, 1975 and June, 1977: a fact easy to conform since the murderers, like the Nazis, photographed them before and after death. Their names, ages, height, and weight were recorded. The Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot. wrongfully enjoys the respect of recognition from the United Nations. Moreover, he is given refuge in America's newest friend, China. The fact remains that both Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger (who made a mockery by accepting the Nobel Peace Prize) are directly responsible for launching their "secret war" which bombed Cambodia into the depths of hell, and gave rise to the murderous Khmer Rouge regime. While world attention begins to focus on the horror inside Cambodia, innocent children will be suffering from the slow agonizing death of starvation. The $69 million dollars in aid proposed by Jimmy Carter is too little and too late! The American people will have to carry the burden of this injustice because it was their ignorance and misfortunate that voted Nixon and his mob into power. Editor's Note: Information for this editorial was gained from "The Militant," Oct. 26, 1979. Homesexuals try to portray a principle that is retrogressive in its very nature. I for one do not feel it is right or hist for nponle to demand acceptance for these principles that could prove the entire destruction of our society and freedom Communism and other freedom usurping forces, on the move in the world that would tear the free countries apart if given the proper chance leave America with ,no choice but hold to the standards of freedom or be swept down into bondage. Maybe they should take a harder look at themselves and their position and condition. Sincerely, David B. Oswald |
