Show .betters thump opposition, gain championship by guy yocom Weber States's tennis team, playing almost flawlessly for three days went undefeated in and won the Big Sky Tennis Championships Saturday for the first time in its history. The crowning achievement climaxed years of struggle and anticipation and left the Wildcat netters at the mecca of league tennis circles. The netters ran almost unopposed throughout the tourney, and turned back a challenge by defending champion Idaho on the last day by winning 6-3. The Vandals, who had won 10 of the previous 11 Big Sky championships, finished second with a 5-1 record for the three-day meet. Jon Perran, who burst out of a period of inactivity to claim the number one singles title, led Weber's individual efforts and improved on his number two ranking in last year's championship tournament. Perran was 6-0 for the Wildcats. Kevin Kempin, Greg Scher-merhorn, and Rod Hunt also were 6-0 for the tournament, and each won firsts in number three, . four and five singles respectively. Perran and Kempin also won the number one doubled division 6-0. Cowboys ink Jordan Randy Jordan, Weber State's brilliant receiver who won all-league and all-American honors last year, was signed to a multip year contract with the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, it was announced Saturday. Terms of the contract were not announced, but it covered three years and gave Jordan a substantial bonus. Northern Arizona finished fourth with 33 points, followed by Montana, 14; Montana State, 14; and Idaho State, with only one point. Weber State took an early 18-0 lead after the first day, whipping both Montana and Montana State 9-0. On Friday, the men defeated Northern Arizona 8-1 and shutout hapless Idaho State 9-0. NAU, who was closest to the Wildcats in the all-sports chase, gave Idaho a rough time on Thursday, though losing 5-4. Saturday was climactic, however, wince Weber drew both Boise State and Idaho on the same day. The netters beat both in convincing fashion to batten down the championship trophy. Boise State was all but eliminated after the first day when the Broncos were beaten 8-1 by Idaho. Peter Markes finished fourth in number two singles, and Kay Barney contributed to the team effort with a third place showing in the number six singles bracked. May, 22 ADS Golfers unapposed as Big Sky champions With the biggest pressure being merely to make an appearance, Weber State's golf team shattered it's own tournament record by 45 strokes and waltzed home with the 1979 Big Sky Golf Championships Saturday in Boise, Idaho. The team fired a collective 1050 agregate, 30 under par on the relatively easy Warm Springs Golf Course to gain their eighth consecutive championship. The margin of victory was stunning, with the Wildcats defeating runner-up Idaho State by a whopping 71 strokes. Vance Christiansen, who has a penchant for charting very low scores at the right moment, put together three good rounds in a row to take medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 205, 11 under par. Christiansen's opening round 67 included a spectacular 28 on Women eye softball tourney on The women's softball team will take a 9-9 conference record and high hopes into the Region Seven Collegiate Softball tournament which begins Thursday at the Fourth Street Complex in Ogden. The tournament will run through Saturday and includes six teams from Region Seven-Division 1, and two teams from Division Two. At stake are three slots in the Region Seven representation at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Competing will be New Mexicio State, Idaho State, Arizona State, Weber State, University of Arizona, University of Utah, Northern Colorado, and Metro State. In the 18 total rounds played by the individual players from Weber State, only four were over par, a tribute to the ability of the Wildcat players. The team must now await a possible invitation to the NCAA championships, which will be played in North Carolina later this month. Should the team as a whole fail to qualify, the chances look good that at least two members of the team will qualify for an individual berth. Thursday The women are coming off two conference doubleheaders played last weekend, in which they won two and lost two. Rubber-armed Diane Mangano pitched all four games and gave up an average of just three runs per game against Utah State and Utah. Errors were at a minimum for the women against the two fine teams, and the wins they accumulated enabled the team to get into the post-season tourney this week. The tournament will continue throueh Saturday. Weber State hosted the first annual WSC annual Women's Invitational Track and Field Meet in Ogden Saturday, with the Lady Wildcats getting a few fine showings in various events.
