Show WSC honors students attend western regional conference by Linda Ferguson The honors program at WSC turned out to be more complete and liberal than most of the other programs at the other eleven colleges and universities represented at the Western Regional Honors Conference held last weekend at Brighman Young University. Twelve of the two hundred honors program members at WSC attended the conference along with representatives from University of California at Los Angeles, Boise State, Texas Technical University, North Texas State, California State at Northridge, Utah State, University of Utah, San Diego State, Ricks, University of Washington, and B.Y.U. Included at the conference were workshops, panel discussions, a business meeting and banquet, featuring J. Reuben Clark, III, professor emeritus of classics at BYU, as speaker. Charles Burns, WSC senior, was moderator for a student-run workshop about honors identity. Other workshops discussed the independent learning experience, honors retreats, the national Task force oks hiking student fees ASWSC Release The ASWSC Executive Council approved the proposed student fee increases for the 1979-80 school year at this week's meeting. A Fee Task Force, made up of student and administration representatives recommended a $2.00 fee increase over the $49.00 which was paid per quarter this year. The increase is based on figures prepared by Pat Riley, Comptroller for Weber State. He analysed the in-flow and out-flow of funds for this school year and based next year's projection on these figures. He sighted to the Fee Task Force that there would be serious shortages in the funds for the Union Building, the Health Center, and in athletics. He asked the Fee Task Force to consider helping with these shortages through increased student fees. The Task Force, made up of Greg Garfield, ASWSC president, Kirk Heaton, academic senate representative, Dave Rich, student government advisor, and Dr. Wilson, WSC administrative vice-president, recommended the following changes for the Executive Council's approval: Student Government, because of its reduction in budget this year, take a .50 per quarter cut. The .50 cut from student government be applied to cover Title IX expenditures. Student Health Center should receive an additional $1.00 per quarter. With the additional funds the center will be moved to a more central location, and its services will be expanded. Convocations fee should be cut by .25. The .25 from convocations should be applied to a new category, extra-murals, which would provide funds for sports activities not under the current athletic programs. It would be administered by the Inter-mural office. honors council and the Appalachian semester, team teaching to synthesize the humanist and the scientist, and student advisory boards. WSC students at the conference, after hearing problems : other programs struggle to solve, called themselves lucky to receive all the student, faculty, and administrative support they enjoy. While other programs seek special priviledges and cope with the question of elitism, Weber's program members have general and departmental honor options, upper and lower level options within one class, and an adequate budget. Some options that other college representatives said just will not work in their area have been functioning at Weber for many years, said conference participants from WSC. WSC attendees did realize several options to strengthen the program in the next year. Plans include a monthly lecture-idea exchange session, and a weekend honors retreat. May 18-20. San Diego State was selected as Western Regional Honors Conference site for 1980, with Boise State as the selection for 1981.
