Show 1 Ve 8 Signpost May 9, 1978 Meetings held Thursdays Athletes serve Christ A "Fellowship of Christain Athletes" group recently began at Weber State College. The organization is the first of its kind at WSC and the second ever in Utah. Utah State University also has a Christian Athlete Fellowship. Qualifications to join this organization are that one be a current or former athlete at Weber State College. The sponsor of the group, Ed Lee, a former Wildcat football player, said the purpose of the group is: "to confront coaches and athletes and through them the youth of the nation with the challenge and excitment of knowing Christ and serving him through our vocations." Meetings The group has meetings every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in room 352 of the Union Building. Any athlete interested in fellowship is invited to attend. The meeting will include bible study, singing, speakers and stress fellowshiping. The Fellowship's officers are: President Dennis Duncanson (football player); vice president Matt Cole (golfer); Secretary Jeff Gwinn (golfer) and treasurer Rob Wurm (wrestler). Any athlete interested in joining this group should contact one of the offices or attend the Thursday meeting. Faculty bowling news The WSC Faculty Staff Bowling League bowled the thirteenth round of the second half last Thursday evening at the Union Lanes. The Dello Dayton team remains in first place, the Narlene Campbell team in second, and the Spencer Seager team in third place. Earl Erickson bowled a scratch game of 212, series 563. Richard Miller bowled a 209 game, series 519. Craige Hall bowled a 202 game, series 536. Gail Miles bowled a 200 game, series 546. Robert Clarke bowled a 200 game, series 488. HEAVY BOOK LOAD? Sell those books to the WSC Bookstore. itrong leads track effort Lynn Strong was the top Weber State finisher last Saturday in a triangular track and field meet held at Pullman, Washington. Strong placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a clocking of 8:57.6. Host Washington State won 17 of the 19 events to dominate the competition. WSU totaled 134 points to defeat Weber State with 33 points in dual meet scoring. WSU defeated Montana 124-56 in dual scoring, while Montana downed Weber 95-47 also according to dual scoring points. The host Washington State team, led by two world record holding distance runners showed that they are a real challenge to win the NCAA Track Title next month. Third Places Besides Strong's runnerup finish, the 'Cats took four third places. Terry Elton finished third at 1:53 in the 800 meter run; Bill Shaw leaped 6-8 in the high jump, and Norberto Segura ran the 5,000 meters in a third place 14:31.5 clocking. Jeff Swanger had three javelin throws over 209 feet with his best sailing 211-3V2. Swanger and Segura's performances were both personal bests. Weber now takes one week off prior to the Pig Sky Track Championships to be held May 19- 20. WSC softball team plays ASU Sun Devils tonight The Weber State Softball Team will play their final regular season game of the year tonight in Phoenix against the Arizona State Sun Devils. This game is a makeup game of a contest cancelled last month. Following that game, on Thursday, the 'Cats will be one of three teams entered in the Intermountain playoffs. The eight teams in this postseason tournament will be gunning for the three positions available for advancement into the College World Series Tournament. 12-8 Record WSC has a 12-8 season record and a third place 5-3 conference record going into tonight's game against ASU. Weber split a pair of games last Friday against Brigham Young on the road. Sue Henderson had some excellent two-hitch in the first game to lead the 'Cats to a 5-0 victory. BYU, however, captured the second game 3-2. Freshman Mechelle Fowden and Penny Wanberg had some stellar hitting for Weber in the BYU series. Two wrestlers signup A pair of Wyoming State wrestling champions from Green River have signed letters of intent to attend Weber State College this fall. The new WSC Wrestling coach, John Webb, has announced Dale Hansen and Arthur Maestas will both attend WSC next year. Hansen, a 155 pound Wyoming star compiled a prep won-loss record of 80-6 during three years of competition, while Maestas had a three year record of 51-3 in the 119 pound weight division.
