Show May 2, 1978 Signpost Page 7 Final 18 holes on Weber State plays in BSC golf tournament The heavily favored Weber State Golf Team will attempt to capture its seventh consecutive Big Sky Conference Golf Championship today at Spokane, Washington. The first 18 holes in the conference tournament were played yesterday, while the final 18 holes are on tap for today. Last year the 'Cats won the Big Sky title by 79 total strokes and this year is expected to be no exception. Boise State, Montana, Idaho State, Idaho and host Gonzaga will all be battling for that runnerup spot. Defend title Weber's Mike Gove will be Intramural Applications are now being taken for next year's WSC Intramural Department officers and supervisors. Applications are available from the intramural office and should be filled out as soon as possible. Those persons chosen would be named this quarter and assume their duties next fall. Some positions, the supervisory positions are paid, while the officer positions are voluntary. But teammate Mike Borich has come on strong of late and has finished ahead of Gove in the last two tournaments. The other four Wildcat golfers will be: Joe L. Higham, Matt Cole, Vance Christiansen and John Graham. Wildcat fans often speak of the WSC Big Sky dynasty in basketball during the last sixties and early seventies, but it is well to remember that WSC won only five straight basketball titles in the Big Sky. In comparison, WSC has won six straight Big Sky Golf officers needed the offices of president, manager and secretary for three areas each men, women's and the co-recreation programs. Lastweek In last week's final tuneup meet prior to the 'Sky tourney, WSC finished 8th overall in the tough Sun Devil Golf Invitational held at Scottsdale, Arizona. BYU won the title, but the 'Cats finished ahead of such teams as Arizona, New Mexico, Stanford, Pacific, San Jose, Colorado and Long Beach State. The 'Cats improved their team title by 56 strokes more than in the previous year at this tourney. Borich led Weber with a one under par 215. Gove was one back at 216. overall knowledge of WSC in-tramurals. Journalism background is preferred, but not required. Ph. 393-2794 after 5. 5-5 Tennis team wins Weber State captured its second tournament win in as many weeks over the weekend with a strong performance on the second day of play. Weber scored 44 points to outdistance runnerup Nevada-Las Vegas by ten points in the Snow College Invitational Tournament. The remaining tourney spots were filled by Utah State, Snow and Mesa. Singles Titles The 'Cats won seven of 9 singles titles, but were without the services of number one singles ace, Damir Popadic who was previously suspended from the team for disciplinary reasons. Jon Perran, Jerry Naumann, Kevin Kempin, Vic Blocher and Tim Finger all captured singles titles. Weber's next meet is the all-important Big Sky Championships this Friday. WSC captures four victories at Boise The WSC Tracks ters won four first places last Saturday in a multi-team meet held at Boise, Idaho. Lynn Strong, Mike Vaughn, Norberto Segura and Jeff Swanger all won their respective events for the Wildcats.The meet was a non-scoring competition that included some of the top teams in the Big Sky Conference as well as Utah State University. Strong won the steeplechase in Swanger ranked tenth Weber State's Track and field star, freshman Jeff Swanger of Ogden, is ranked as the tenth best collegiate decatholon performer in the nation in this month's issue of TRACK AND FIELD NEWS. The decathlon is a ten event competition that includes: the pole vault, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, high hurdles, javelin, 400, 100 and 1500 meter runs. Four noteable second place finishes by WSC were taken by Bill Shaw in the high jump (6-6), Jorge Ruiz in the 10,000 meters (31:37.8); Swanger in the long jump (23-2) and Segura in the 5,000 meters (14:45.92).
