Show o o Volume 37, Number 50 Weber State College May 6, 1977 Jl S ASWSC duties change for 77-78 This year, the student executive council of WSC had control of approximately $120,000 of student fees. The council is made up of six vice presidents and a president, who are all elected from the studentbody at large. The constitution puts no restrictions on the way the council must spend those student funds under their jurisdiction. There are no requirements regarding the way money is budgeted and which programs should or should not continue. Members of the council receive a stipend of $400 a quarter, as well as a tuition and fee waiver. The Supreme Court is made up of five students appointed by the executive council. The court has the power to determine the constitutionality of any action by an associated students organization. In recent years, the court has made determinations on the legality of elections for AWS and ASWSC officers as well as several other activities. Another body of Associated Student Government is the Academic Assembly. The purpose of the assembly is to see that students have a voice in the academic programs on campus. The assembly is made up of the Academic Vice President of the Executive Council and one representative from each school on campus." The assemblymen are responsible for setting up an area assembly with representatives from each department within the school. The Council President serves as chairman of the council and is also the student representative on the Institutional Council of the college. The Academic Vice President serves as chairman of the Academic Assembly and is also responsible for seeing that the, students have a voice in the academic programs. The job of the Administrative Vice President is to deal with the college administration and to supervise all opinion research done by student government. The responsibilities of the Cultural Vice President include planning concerts and convocations.The Public Relations Vice President's job is to increase Understanding and good will between the Associated Students and the college and local communities.Developing services to meet student needs is the job of the Student Services Vice President. This includes programs such as married student housing and day care. The job of the Activities Vice President includes planning of all entertainment oriented programs on campus. The Activities Vice President also serves as chairman of the campus activities board. Newly elected officers for next year are: Mike Hunsaker, President; Kim Heaton, Academic Vice President; Dan Forsey, Activities Vice President; Dwayne Carrington, Administrative Vice President; Chris Davis, Cultural Vice President; and Steve Welker, Public Relations Vice President. Page 2 Page 4 Page 6 Page 8 Pages 9, 10, 11 Founders' Day WSC ce 88th anniversary The 88th anniversary of the founding of Weber State College will be celebrated today. "Founders' Day," will be marked by the dedication of the Ada Lindquist Plaza and Fountain, and will also include a luncheon and award presentation.The day's activities will begin with the dedication of the plaza and fountain at 11 a.m. on the east terrace of the plaza. The site memorializes the late Mrs. Ada Lindquist, the wife of the late C.J. A. Lindquist, Ogden's pioneer funeral director. Costs of, building the plaza, fountain, terraced walkways, planter boxes and other features were covered in a donation from the Lindquist family. Welcoming and introductory remarks will be made by WSC President Joseph L. Bishop, to be followed by short speeches by A variety of free activities will be conducted on campus during "Spring Fever Week," according to Activities Vice President Jon Tanner. Running-from May 9 to May 13, "Spring Fever Week" is a joint project of the ASWSC Activities Office and the Inter-Fraternal Council, Tanner noted. Featured activities include movies, an outdoor stomp, and several competitions such as a "Gong Show," road rally, and skateboard competition. Friday will feature a roast-pig luau and polynesian entertainment, to be followed by an eibrate WSC Institutional Council member Dale T. Browning and Fred Froerer, commissioner of the Utah State Building Board. Both are close friends of the Lindquist family. Responses will be made by three children of Mrs. Lindquist, Mrs. Norman (Barbara) Tanner, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Pell, and John A. Lindquist. Along with two sisters of Mrs. Lindquist, Mrs. Pearl T. Grant and Mrs. Gertrude T. Tarbet, they will then activate the fountain. Musical numbers will be provided by the WSC Band under the direction of Donald Threlkeld, and "Good Company," directed by Dick Davis. Following the dedicatory ceremonies, the "Founders' Day" luncheon will be held in the WSC Union Building Ballroom, from noon to 1 p.m. A traditional part of the annual celebration is the awarding of the ' Spring Fever outdoor stomp. Activities on Monday afternoon and Wednesday are being Monday, May 9 - Afternoon activities sponsored by Fraternities at 7 :30p.m. Movies in U.B. Theatre, "Wuthering Heights" and a Flash Gordon Series. Tuesday, May 10 - "Gong Show" at noon in UB Lobby, $50 and $25 prizes. Wednesday, May 11 - Fraternity-sponsored activities. Thursday, May 12 - Road Rally with $15, $10, and $5 prizes. Skateboard competition with $15, $10, $5 prizes ( Fine Arts parking lot at noon ) Friday, May 13 - Luau at 7 p.m. Polynesian entertainment, 7:30-9 p.m. Outdoor stomp, with music by Braintrust. 9 p.m. to midnight. s H. Aldous Dixon Award, given in honor of the former Weber State president who served from 1919 to 1920 and from 1937 to 1953. This year the Dixon Award will be presented to Merlon Stevenson, a former teacher, administrator and coach at WSC. Stevenson began his career at Weber State in 1921. From 1924-32 he headed the Mathematic Department and coached football, basketball, track and tennis. He served under five different college presidents before leaving in 1964. Stevenson was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1973 and the Meritorious Service Award in 1974. He was also honored by the Associated Students of WSC in 1975. The keynote address at the Luncheon will be delivered by former Weber State President Dr. William P. Miller. Week' coming sponsored by the Greek Fraternities and will be announced later.
