Show Sept. 30, 1977 Signpost Page 23 Summer sports summary Many things happened on the Weber State College Sports Scene during the summer. Briefly summarized in the following are highlights for each sport or activity:ATHLETIC AWARDS BANQUET The top Wildcat Athletes named for last year were: Cross country Jorge Ruiz. Football Rod Bockwoldt. Volleyball Barbara Headley. Men's basketball Stan Mayhew. Women's basketball Kathy Miller. Gymnastics Anna Lee Maw. Wrestling Mike Isom. Golf Mike Gove. Tennis Jerry Naumann. Softball Kim Gianchetta. Track Norberto Segura. Male Scholar Athlete-Steve Scharmann. Women's Scholar Athlete Chris Thor-nock. Outstanding Senior Athlete (men) Stan Mayhew. Outstanding Female Senior Athlete Chris Thornock. Track Weber State signed some top freshman athletes. Two of the most versatile athletes signed were: Bonneville High's Jeff Swanger (6-10y4 in the high ' jump, 23-3 in long jump) ; Russell Eyre from Lyman, Wyoming (whose also an all-state basketball and football player), who won the 440 yard dash, intermediate hurdles, high hurdles, long jump and triple jump at the Wyoming state track championships last spring. BASKETBALL WSC Basketball Coach Neil McCarthy was given a new three year contract good through April of 1980. Stan Mayhew, last year's premier Wildcat Basketball player was the 51st player selected in last Summers NBA Draft. WRESTLING Tony Furch, a WSC wrestler who redshirted last winter placed fourth during the summer in the National Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships held at Iowa, City Iowa. Furch competed in the 167 pound class and won six matches and lost two. He defeated every U.S. Collegiate wrestler he faced, losing only to two former U.S. Olympic Wrestlers. GOLF In early June, Weber's premier golfer Mike Gove competed in the NCAA Golf Championships held at Hamilton, New York. Gove played in dividually in the tournament, but suffered an elimination after the third round because he was not on a team and the rules were if a player is not on a team; then he must be within 10 shots of the leader. Gove shot the tournament's best third round score of 74 and had the intermountain area's best score at the time, but not being on a team worked against him.
