Call 399-5941 , ext. 476 (EDITOR'S NOTE-This is the first article in a two part series concerning how well Weber State College stacks up athletically to BVU, Utah and Utah State) A usually asked, but important question among Weber State College Sports Fans and Supporters is this: "How does Weber State compare athletically to its three instate rivals (BYU, Utah State and Utah)?" However, there is no simple answer - to this highly controversial question since Weber State competes in seven men's and four women's sports against its instate rivals. Those eleven different sports add up to a lot of variety in terms of a comparison. A more specific question to ask is "can Weber State effectively compete in athletics against Utah's other ' three major institutions of higher education?" Stacks Up Well Generally speaking, Weber stacks up extremely well against its trio of rival schools in the sports of: Men's basketball and women's softball and basketball. Then in the sports of: men's track, cross country, golf, wrestling and women's volleyball Weber's success against its instate rival schools fluctuates considerably each year and seems to be sort of on "middle ground." However, in men's football and tennis as well as in women's gymnastics, Weber is almost totally outclassed by BYU, USU and Utah. An analysis of each sport and it's competitive instate record: An 8-9 Record Basketball traditionally being the strong sport of WSC Athletics, M naturally Weber is very competitive against it's rivals. Overall, the Wildcats have accumulated an 8-9 win-loss basketball game record against the three other Utah schools. In the 17 games, Weber has scored a total of 1,268 points to it's opponents l,296--a difference to the red of 28 points. Individually against Utah State University on the hardwoods, Weber has a 5-6 record. The 'Cats scored a total of 790 points in those eleven games to the Aggies 822 total, a difference of 32 points. BYU has played Weber only three times on the basketball court, but the Cougars are winners of two of those three games. Yet, in total points scored in those games, WSC has 232 to BYU's 229. Single Point Weber has also met Utah in only three basketball games, but here the Cats are ahead in the series 2-1. These games have been extremely close with Weber scoring 246 points to Utah's 245, a difference of only a single point. Weber's three biggest wins against these schools were: (1971) Weber edged Utah State in; Logan 63-62 in the first ever game between the two schools, while WSC did the same to Utah in 1972 with an 81-70 win in Salt Lake and to BYU with a 76-63 win in 1974atOgden. Weber's biggest loss in basketball came at the hands of Utah State 92-66 in 1975 at Logan. Yes, WSC is very equal in basketball against it's rivals and beginning next season, it will play each of the three other Utah schools twice each year-one game at home and one on the road. Softball season ends by Donna Schultz The season for Women's Softball is over. For all practical purposes, that is. It ended for WSC last Saturday in Salt Lake City when the team surrendered two games to the University of Utah. On Friday the women played BYU and won both games, but BYU has had to withdraw from the tournament because of the club status of their team. So the games against BYU do not help Weber toward a place in the State qualifying tournament. In one of Saturday's games Weber was three runs ahead of the U, but the other team hit eight straight balls and we were unable to recover. Coach Joy Wood blames the losses on a lack of hitting arid several untimely mistakes. Next week Weber will begin the 1 ry Ox If ruy it Want Solid Challenge Women's softball-Weber holds an 20-6 win-loss record in this sport against BYU, USU and Utah. Individually, WSC is 8-3 against Utah State; 5-2 against BYU and 7-1 against Utah. Weber has been to the national softball tournament in the past and poses a solid challenge to Utah's other schools in this sport. Women's basketball- Like the Men, the Weber Women are almost completely equal with their rivals on the hardwoods. Overall, Weber is 10-12 against them. Individually, WSC is 1-5 against USU; 5-2 against BYU and 4-5 vs. Utah In this sport, WSC is cerrtainly competitive with its rivals. A Golf Power Golf Perennially, Weber has been a golf power for the in-termountain area. Only BYU's traditionally national ranked golf team has been an obstacle to the Cats, but last fall, Weber beat BYU in a golf tournament by 5 strokes. That marked the first time ever that Weber had beaten BYU in Golf. WSC also defeated Utah and USU in that tournament. But the pendulum swings and this spring, BYU demolished WSC 40V2-3V2 in a dual golf meet; and Utah knocked off Weber also 23-10. However, Weber is good enough in golf to compete against the other three Utah schools and make a respectable showing most every year. Part two of this article will appear in a future issue of the Signpost. It will discuss the remaining seven sports in which WSC does not compare so well against the other three major Utah schools. regional playoffs at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the softball complex on fourth street. Mrs. Wood did not know as of Monday who the opponent for Thursday would be. Although a team cannot qualify for nationals through the regional tournament this year, next year we will be able to. But after the regionals this weekend, the WSC Softball team will be finished for the season. . Coach Wood said that the team is working on improving hitting in hopes of having a little .revenge over the University of Utah this weekend. The U. of U. will be representing Utah in the National tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, along with the University of Northern Colorado, and Arizona State University. All three will compete with WSC in the regionals. our i- II' i ou 011 ads |
