Montana showed great depth throughout their team by placing three runners in the top ten positions and having their fifth man finish as high as 17th. Although he improved his course time by 28 seconds, he was unable to qualify for the NCAA national meet. Perhaps the most courageous performance of the afternoon came from Wildcat Pete Garcia. He had not run any practice for over a week due to very painful shin splits. He did run in the race, however, finishing in 37th place as the Wildcats fourth man. Three best The University of Montana and the three best other finishers (Larry Gerich, Northern Arizona and Steve Collier and Jim Bon-nell from Boise) will represent the Big Sky Conference at the NCAA national championship at Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 25. The top ten finishers in the race automatically comprised the conference 1974 all-star team. The team standings were as follows: Montana, 45; Northern Arizona, 53; Boise State, 62; Idaho, 73; Weber 127; Idaho State, 134; Montana State, 205 and Gonzaga, 240.
