Show page 2 signpost oct. 27, 1972 overnor of north Carolina principal inaugural speaker 9 Terry Sanford, known for his leadership as the education governor" of North Carolina, and now as the president of Duke University, will be the principle speaker at WSC President Joseph L. Bishop's Inaugural Convocation at 2 p.m., Nov. 10. Sanford, who was elected to the presidency of Duke University Dec. 13, 1969, holds the Doctor of Law degree from the University of North Carolina Law School. He was elected governor of North Carolina in 1960 on a platform calling for more education and taxes to pay for it. Under his gubernatorial leadership, North Carolina teachers received large salary increases and reduced workloads, statewide community college and educational TV systems were established, libraries and school laboratories were improved, remedial programs were begun for children needing them, and vocational training was updated. Altogether, the public school budget was increased during his term by 50 per cent and the higher education budget by 70 per cent. Sanford also promoted a school for underachievers, one for gifted children known as "The Governor's School," a residential school of arts, and an educational coordinating and re search center. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from 12 different colleges and universities and is a member of two international organizations including the United Nations Association National Policy Panel on Space Communications and the United Nations and the National Council of the U.S. People's Fund for the United Nations, Inc. Sanford was the architect of two distinctive organizations called "The Compact for Education" and "The Institute on State Programming." The Institute of State Programming was established to help state governments function more productively. The displays will be moved to the UB Ball Room for the Homecoming dance Saturday evening.According to Stan Kano, Exhibits Committee chairman, the fraternities on the campus were invited to participate but they were late putting up their exhibits.Three cash awards will be presented to the groups with the best displays. First prize will be $15, second $10, and third $5. "The idea is to promote the clubs and organizations as well as entertainment for the public," said Kano. One display, designed by the Tau Theata Nu sorority, met with a minor disaster Monday when a pink elephant section of their "Peanut Gallery" theme was stolen. It was found the next day and with a little patching and re-stuffing appears in excellent shape. Kano expressed some disappointment at the delay in participation by the fraternities in this event which was meant to pro mote their organizations. The latter was developed by Sanford from an idea suggested by Dr. James B. Conant. Conant later wrote in his book, "My Several Lives": "I began to realize what a master workman had taken over the task of creating a new educational agency.
