May 22 to 27. The winner of the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Tony Award for best musical, "1776", was written by Peter Stone and has music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards. The musical is based on the historical records of the Con tinental Congress meeting in Philadelphia in the spring and summer of 1776 and the struggle between the delegates in declaring the Colonies free and independent of the rule of King George and the British Parliament.
