Basketball has always been king at Weber State, and this year was no different. The Wildcats, who won the title last year in the Big Sky with an 8-2 record, compiled the same league mark this season --but had to settle for a tie for the title with Gonzaga. The overall season record for Dick Motta's boys was 20-5. It was the second straight 20-game or more winning season at WSC, and it was perhaps the most exciting of all. Due to a change in scheduling, Gonzaga got off to a quick lead in the conference standings while the Cats were calmly knocking off non-league foes. The crew was confident they could overtake the Bulldogs .by the end of the season. The race was a squeaker, too. Gonzaga had an 8-1 record going into their final game with lowly Montana State and it looked like a sure championship for Coach Hank Anderson's competitive team from Spokane. But the improbable happened -- Montana State upset the Bulldogs by one point and thereby gave the Cats a shot at the title. Weber State had lost two, so a loss in its final two games at home against Montana andMontanaState would be fatal. The flamboyant Cats, however, were at their best as they toyed with the visitors from the north during the first half and went on a rampage during the second half - - it was the same story for both games. When they tallied up the league standings, there sat Weber State on top again with an 8-2 record, the same as Gonzaga's. But the Wildcats had the better league record, 20-5 to 19-7. They had not lost their touch after all. IF it I P L J LJr Here's a scene from the frosh-varsity game at the start of the season. By the way, varsity won. It was a double title year for the Cats. It wasn't long before Jerry Trice and Gene Visscher were invited to try out for the Baltimore Bullets of the National Basketball Association - - the first players in Weber's long history of winning to ever be so honored. But the laurels must be spread far and wide, for there were many who helped build this hoop squad into one of the finest in the West-where basketball is the best in the nation. Although Motta will not have as many aces back for next year's team as he did this season, the Wildcats will again be strong. Greg Harrop, third leading scorer this year, will direct the Cats from the guard line. Ted Bryant and Eugene Hill will be counted on heavily next season also.
