Show Page 12 THE SIGNPOST September 27, 1968 Entries Being Taken For Fall Intra-mural Events The Women's Intra-mural Association will sponsor a fun night called Sports Smorgas-board Monday at 7 :00 p.m. in the gym. All girls interested in participating in WIA activities are invited to attend. Also, a reminder to dress appropriately especially to wear gym shoes. Those girls desiring to play tennis and speed ball should SCOCCER Soccer begins another gruelling season October 5, with Weber State playing in a newly organized collegiate league. Teams from WSC, Utah State, and two each from BYU and Utah will make up the new league. Expnsion to Idaho State and Boise is anticipated for next year. Those interested in playing soccer this fall should contact Paul Zehnphenning by calling 393-6024, or meet for practice on the field west of the gym next Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Schedule of Week's Events Friday, Sept. 27, Cross Country at Mt. Ogden Park, 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, Fdotball , WSC at NAU, Flagstaff, 2 :30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, Baseball, fall workouts, John Affleck Park. Tuedsay, Oct. 1, Soccre practice, field west of gym, 4:30 p.m. Contact Miss Otte or any of the WIA officers. The schedule of games will be available in the WIA office. MIA All clubs and independant teams should have a representative at the Men's Intra-mural Association meeting at noon on October 2, in G104. There is a special invitation to indepen-dants to increase the number of teams in their league. More participation from the independant groups or individuals is encouraged for a more competitive league. Entries for flag football should be in the athletic office by October 4. This year flag football will be played on the field west of the gym instead of on the lower quad. Although no more definite information has been decided, entries are being taken for golf and tennis. The golf title will be decided by several rounds rather than one. Singles and doubles champions will be decided in tennis. Those who are planning to run in the cross country race should be getting in shape. The race will be run later in the quarter. Wrestling has been moved up from the winter quarter activities so that the wrestling coach can possibly choose some grapplers for varsity competition.Involvement in the intramural program is expected to be the best ever. Coach Dick Williams and Kent Lindsey will direct the activities this year. All sports trophy for 1967-68. The Wildcat basketball team captured their third league title and represented the conference in the NCAA Region-als. The baseball squad also won the title and made it to the regionals .All departments can be proud of the efforts' they put forth to win the All Sports trophy. New Weber State baseball coach Blaine Sylvester has called for a special fall workout which will be conducted at the John Affleck Park from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. All students interested in trying out for the team, whether on scholorship or not, are encouraged to meet at the ballpark on Monday, September 30, at 3:30 p.m. Coach Sylvester takes the helm from Coach Dick Williams, who piloted the Wildcats nine to the NCAA Regionals last spring. Returning lettermen will give Coach Sylvester a strong nucleus, especially in the infield and on the mound. He will have to replace the outfield of Craig Glad Gladwell, Ray Meibos and Clair Wadman. New personel who wll be heavily counted on are catcher, Blake Zimmerman, of Orem ; infielder, Frank Park, of Tooele; infielder, Jim Amicone, of Granger; Allan Horner, an outfielder from Boise; pitcher-outfielder, Dominic Albano, of Chicago; pitcher, Barry Bag-ley, of Olympus ; and infielder, Layne Thompson, of Weber High, Coach Sylvester graduated .from the University of Utah in '1958 before turning pro, then returned there to receive his masters degree in 1965. At the Blaine Sylvester U of U, he was anall-conference pitcher two years, and third team All-America his senior year. A high school coach at Granger and Later South High School, his teams have taken a second place in state, and won the league title twice. His American Legion team in 1965, won the state title. " Ogden's Ail-Star High School game has featured many top ballplayers from the South squads coached by Coach Sylvester.He is married to the former Karen Corry, They have two children, Cory, age five; and Nicole, age three.
