His eyes left the road and his mind wandered to something else besides driving or he thought he could save minutes by speeding faster than the speed limit. For a moment it was exhilarating racing down the canyon road, weaving in and out of city traffic, skirting the guard rails on steep curves. It was fun and exciting for a moment. And then. . . A flash of terror in seeing the oncoming car cross the center line. . .roll sideways down a canyon wall. . .skid into a telephone pole. Someone misjudged the speed of his car, didn't see the stop sign or ran the red light. And then. . . Came a crash. . .the panic and the horror-stricken terror and the deadly silence. Nothing but silence. Think for a moment. That's all it may take to prevent you from becoming involved in a serious accident during the Independence Day weekend. Think of the loved ones depending and caring for you. . .of the things you have planned for the future. . .a long, bright future ahead of you. Is it worth the moment it takes to lose control?. . .to drive the extra few miles an hour?. . .to drink that extra drink?. . .to refuse the right of way to another car or a pedestrian? Stop and think. Think safety. Practice safety. Live safety. Be on guard against those careless drivers who won't stop to think, and when those precious moments come after the holiday, you'll be alive to enjoy them. Have a happy holiday. Take those moments to enjoy yourself. . .but make the holiday weekend a safety weekend and you'll be able to enjoy those holidays still to come. Published weekly by Dennis G.
