This variation, in the form of purple helmets worn by six Weber team members, is a new award program instituted this year to give outstanding WSC gridders recognition for outstanding playing. The Wildcats and Diablos have met only once before on the gridiron, and the Diablos were defeated 70-7. Coach Jim Williams has beefed up the 1967 Diablo team with a large group of transfers and redshirts to go along with a veteran band of lettermen. Only twelve men are gone from last years group and the team finished strong for a 4-6 mark to finish third in the strong California Collegiate Conference. Cal State LA has an 0-2 record to date with losses to Arlington State (Texas) and Parsons College (Iowa). The Diablos lost a close one to the Texas team 17-14, and the L. A. Team had a winning touchdown called back on a critical line of scrimmage call. The Diablos are stronger at every position than they were in '66. At the time the Wildcats played Northern Arizona, it was thought that the Lumberjacks would be the largest team on the schedule. Cal State, however, is bigger. The front four on defense average 240 pounds in weight and 6-5 in height. Largest of the Diablo front four is tackle Laurence Jarmon at 6-8 and 260 pounds. His mates are, 6-5, 240 pound Bob Johnson, 6-5, 240 pound Rex Pitts, and 6-3, 220 pound John Van Osdel. Scout Lynn Corbridge reports that the Diablos are big and strong. He had special praise for 6-1, 220 pound fine-backer John Deschler. The word is also out that the visitors have a burning desire to whip the Wildcats to mend the wounds that are still smart- r ing from last years pasting. Coach Williams, his staff, and the veteran Diablos would like nothing better than to run up a score on the home club. Cal State runs from a pro-set offense with a flankerback, and two set-backs in the back-field. The Diablos have not been a strong passing team, but it's quite possible that they will try to throw against the Wildcats. Northern Arizona and San Diego State were successful in the air and Cal State has some fine receivers. Welcome Baptists Weekly Meetings to begin Tues. Oct. 10, 1967 5:30 p.m. Room No. 2 U.B.
