Show Page 6 THE WEBER STATE SIGNPOST October 6, 1967 1 SPORTS 1 by Roger Peterson Marv Petersen, Weber's former track and field coach, has recently been appointed to replace Rolf Kerr as dean of men at Weber State College. We thoroughly feel that the college made a wise choice by the appointment. Marv's accomplishments as track coach were seldom launded to the same degree as were the achievements made in the major sports at WSC. However this does not minimize what was actually done. Students and athletes who plan to attend Weber in the forseeable future can thank largely Marv for the development of the track and field facilities in Wildcat Stadium. These facilities, such as the rubberized track, attracted the NCAA's attention this past spring and made Ogden a spot for sports. Marv's devotion to the track team was especially noted by our staff. He was always first to get his boys' names in the news. Those who are unacquainted with sports may think this a vice rather than a virtue, but to an athlete nothing can make him give that extra inch like an extra inch in the newspaper. Steve Blood, Weber's only All-America trackster, was developed under the tutorship of Marv. The former coach came to Weber in 1962 with quite an impressive athletic record of his own. While in the marines he set the record at 232 ft. in the javelin toss. He was also all-marine guard on the 1954 marine team. As dean of men Marv can continue his fine service to the college by developing the male students on campus. One of the big jobs Marv will have to tackle is the development of our campus fraternities. These organizations can greatly enhance our college and under the leadership of Marv, we feel confident that we'll see some real forward movement. an Marv Petersen Men's Intramurals A LEAGUE Mon. The team has been "working out" for only one week now, and has had one meet with the University of Montana at the WSC stadium. The score was 54 to 19 in favor of Montana. Brigham Young University at Provo won the tournament, and placed two individual medalists The final scores were: BYU. . . .461 USU. . . .472 WSC 483 UTAH. . .505 WSC has some fine member , also. Presently, Richard Lef-erink is in the number one spot, with Jim Lenke crowding him while occupying the number two position. The individual award went to Don Hawkins of BYU. HawkinS won a match in a sudden -death play-off. After 27 holes, he was tied with Doug Vilven of USU, Jack Chapman and Jim Miller, both of BYU.
