Show Senate Ends . . .Talks (Continued from Page 1) Scribulus over to the college administration. Dr. James Folger, treasurer of the school and a spokesman for the administration, said "It is doubtful the English Dept. could publish a student publication such as Scribulus on General Funds." Folger was speaking of a proposal by Senator Brent Pulsipher that the English Dept. take over the responsibility of producing the magazine. Neither the Senate or the administration have proposed a method or change in policy that would enable the English Dept. to publish the magazine on student appropriations. Current policy prevents this solution, and a few senators have suggested in private interviews with the Signpost that a change in policy is needed. The controversy over the cancellation of Scribulus funds began nearly two months ago when Senator Pulsipher suggested that the magazine be turned over to the English Dept. He thought the magazine should be made more interesting to read. Senator Doug Twede even went so far as to suggest that literary writings of the students appear in the Signpost instead of in a special booklet. At the same time, Perry Perea and the financial committee of the Senate were assigned to look into the financial aspects of Scribulus. An investigation into the possibilities of re-evaluating the position of the Scribulus in relationship to the English Dept. was ordered. This all took place in the March 10 meeting of the Senate, and two weeks later the school's legislative body took its first official action. Senator Perea reported that in 1963-64 the Scribulus left the Associated Students $180 in the red, 1964-65 $485 in the red, and the 1965-66 Scribulus had the potential of leaving the Associated Students $1,000 in the red. After this report was delivered, Senator Pulsipher said that the reading material in the magazine was poor and the magazine had not served its purpose. Senator Richard Bowman then moved that the Senate withdraw its support from Scribulus for the reasons stated above. The motion carried. The Senate did, however, leave the door open to the English Dept. to continue the publication if they so desired. Gordon Allred, advisor to the magazine, appeared before the Senate on April 21 to appeal the decision to discontinue operating funds for the magazine. He told the Senate they could not judge the Scribulus on literary merit because they had not read it thoroughly. Allred said 'the Senate should have consulted with the advisor and editor of the Scribulus beforehand to indicate their dissatisfaction with it. He told the Senators that he was never under the impression that the school was supposed to make Scribulus pay for itself. The present status of Scribulus is still uncertain. Several actions are open to those persons interested in preserving the magazine as a vital part of the campus, such as allocating funds to the English Dept. to publish the magazine through a policy change or appealing this year's Senate decision in the fall when the structure and personnell of the legislative body will be different. WSC Officers at Leaders' Confab Studentbody officers for next year and Curtis Smout, 1965-66 Business and Financevice-president, left Wednesday morning for El Paso, Texas, for the annual Pacific Studentbody Presidents Association meeting. The delegation hopes to present a bid to caputre the 1966-67 meeting. Under their plan, the convention would be held in Park City.
