Show Page 2 SIGNPOST September 21, 1959 Editorial USflSA Conference Helps S. B. Officers to Plan School Year The Weber College Studentbody Officers and Dr. Stratford pulled themselves wearily out of bed and continued their snoozing in the studentbody stationwagon at 5 a.m. Aug. 22. Their destination: Champaign, Illinois, where the United tSates National Student Association was holding its twelfth congress. The United States National Student Association, known more commonly as the USNSA, is made up of representatives from practically every college and university in the entire United States. The purpose of the trip, which hundreds of student leaders make each year, is to develop leadership and to improve student government on the campus. Meeting people from every part of the United States and visitors from such places as Jamaica, and Hungary enables the delegates to become aware of the problems in the world and in the United States. Workshops, which were made up of about twenty-five student leaders dealt with such problems as "Budgeting & Finance," "Student Executive Government," and "Student Legislative Government." A record was kept of every gathering so that if the honesty and loyalty o fthe USNSA should be questioned a complete record would be available to prove the integrity of the USNSA. The schedule of the day, while attending the conference was a tedious one: 9 a.m. to 12 noon Workshop, 12 to 1 :30 p.m. lunch, 1:30 p.m. to 3 :30 Workshop, 3:30 p.m. to about 5:30 p.m. Plenaries (these were legislative sessions each region, usually composed of one state, sat together with a microphone and sign denoting the location they were from, and voted on USNSA policies) 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. dinner, and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Workshops. Then, from 10 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. the delegates attended regional caucuses orinter-regional caucuses. In inter-regional caucuses, Weber College met with Pennsylvania and West Virginia along with the rest of the Utah region. One of the many highlights of the congress was a banquet held the night before the Weber College delegation left for home. Some of the former presidents of the USNSA spoke, one of them being Bill Denser. Mr. Denser said in his speech that recently he and a State Department Official attended the Vienna Youth Festival, which is a congress similar to the USNSA, only with Communist backing. At this congress, there was a lot of enthusiasm with singing and parading. Bill Denser ' said that the State Department Official turned to him and made the comment, asy they watched the "festival", the two being the only outside observers not taking part in the activity, that it was like watching your own funeral, or the funeral of America. At the USNSA Congress, it was stressed time and time again for the delegates to go back to their respective campuses and to instill an enthusiasm for democracy, and the American way of life, which includes an alert attitude towards local and world events, love of God, love of mankind, and the desire for justice and goodness so that the students can stand up and overcome any obstable which America has to face in the future. The Studentbody Officers offer their services to you at any time and are looking forward to a successful, intelligent, and stimulating school year with such a remarkably fine Studentbody, Administration, and Faculty.
