Show J ligia LtaiJ 0) fa liii, n n Rhead Announces Basketball Slate Intra - mural basketball will start during the second week of winter quarter with each club encouraged to enter two teams, IM Director Ray Rhead announced Monday. Although touch-football and volleyball teams were limited to one per club, the IM committee is going to try and get enough basketball teams for two leagues. "In this way, we can run a post-season tournament to select the winner without matching teams that have played each other," he said. Plans are being considered to play the championship games as preludes to the varsity home-games, according to Coach Rhead. Baczuk Shines Allen Baczuk is probably the most improved football player at Weber College according to Coach Wally Nalder. "When the first practices began I had misgivings about Allan," he said. Baczuk acted like he wanted the misnomer "Butter" Baczuk. But as the season wore on, the un-heralded defensive end from Ogden High got so adept at catching passes, that Wally wanted to call him "Bargain" Baczuk. Allen played good defense for Chris Apostle at Ogden but nobody expected him to jell as a pass catcher. Season's greetings to all at Weber. COLLEGE SERVICE 3685 Harrison Carl Favero, Manager LDS Loses Title Under -U Ruling By LARRY TOMLINSON Signpost Sports Editor Sigma's old men sat in the driver's seat today for the coveted intra-mural Traveling-Trophy by virtue of the Independent's victory in touch football and some shady recruiting by L. D. S. In a rough championship game, the Independents, manned by some of last year's football squad, deged the Sigma veterans and freshmen 7-0. Although the strong Independent contingent officially leads all IM tabulations at this time with 170 points, only the social clubs at Weber can vie for the rotating tro phy, which Excelsior has held for three years now. LDS Ineligible On the basis of games played during touch football, LDS was originally matched against the Independents for the championship. However both Sigma and Excel sior put up legitimate beefs that LDS had used ineligible players. In fact one allegedly wasn't even attending school. When he returned from the football trip to California, Ray Rhead dropped the gillotine on LDS and ruled their two wins over Sigma and Excelsior forfeited. This knocked LDS into fourth. So Sigma, riding high on the strength of their second place fin ish in touch football, leads m the race to relieve the "E" boys of the trophy. Excelsior doesn't plan to roll over and play dead however and is nipping on the Sigma heels (no pun intended) from its third place position. Volleyball The volleyball tournament, which finishes up this week should clarify somewhat which clubs are putting on the strongest bid to unseat Excels'. With Sigma scheduled to play Alpha Rho yesterday for the right to meet the loser of the faculty-independent match, the face has narrowed to four teams and only two social clubs. The winner of thefaculty-independent game automatically goes into the winners bracket while the loser has to meet either Sigma or Alpha Rho for the right to play the winner again. Independents - 170 Sigma - Mo Excelsior 110 LDS -- - 80 Faculty 20 Phoenix - 20 Alpha Rho - .- 20 Tom Carter, a 205-pound Sophomore Guard, who sat out 1955 on the Wildcat bench because he flunked the course as a fullback, was recently named by the athletic department at Weber as the "Outstanding Football Player at Weber; College for 1956-'57." For Carter it is a significant honor and proved, in sports at least, that sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks. It was just over a year ago, during early fall practice, that Tom Carter was benched by football coach, Milt Mecham. Carter as a prep fullback in Rock I Springs, Wyoming, was having an easy time slamming his 20", pounds into the end zone over the small high school lines. But last year, Tom's big frame just couldn't seem to bowl over the college tacklers in pre-season scrimmages against first and second string squads. In fact he was relegated to the bench before the first official game having never quite lived up to the big things which were being predicted at the Wildcat lair. However during the past football season, Carter moved off the bench and into a starting post on the Weber line which sorely needed his 203 plus weight. 1 ERRY XiVmS! MISTLETOE FREE!
