Show SHOT BY BANDITS. Police Captain Brown Killed in an Encounter En-counter With Robbers. Ogden, Utah, May 1. A desperate battle was fought by the officers and two outlaws in the foothills east of Willard about 3 o'clock yesterday. Police Captain William Brown and George Morgan, one of the desperadoes, were killed. James Morg-ao, the other outlaw, was taken prisoner and is now lodged in the Brigham jail. The Morgans Mor-gans are brothers. The prisoner is the one who killed Brown. The men are they with whom a pitched battle was fought at the Hot Springs early yesterday yester-day morning, after which Captain Brown, together with Sheriff Layne and Deputies Bailey and Bclnap, went out in response to the call of the Box Elder officers for help. Captain Brown was in advance of his fellow officers when he was killed. The fatal bullet entered the right breast of Captain Brown, going through a vest pocket memorandum book in the upper vest pocket. It made a clean hole, coming out at the left side of the back, passing either near or through the heart. He was a vigorous, impetuous young athlete and outstripped his fellow officers offi-cers in the chase by sheer phvsical force. Captain Brown leaves a wife and five children. He was one of the most popular members of the force and was generally liked. He was also known as one of the bravest officers that the city ever had. being absolutely fearless in the performance of his duty. |
