Show IOU N G 31 MIN IN PASSES willard carter passed away at his home in this city thursday feb 15 after a brief illness being unable be cause of severe leakage of 0 the heart developed to combat serious complications which seemed to come upon him without warning he was a son of willard U and jane thomas carter born in this city september 16 1886 of the immediate family his mother elder brother ralph T and sisters lilly and hattie now survive him his grandparents on both sides of the house were of the sturdy pioneer acock stock and he developed within him belf elf many of the sterling qualities in merited from them his grandfather elijah thomas was a member of the mormon battalion and fulfilled two foreign missions his wife having come to the valley with a handcart company as a child his grandrath grand fath er william carter was the first man to plow the earth in utah and Is well remembered for his faithful and practical work in church and in the communities muni ties in which he lived his ills grandmother harriet carter who still resides in this city has lived to witness the passing of her hus husband bInd and ten grown sons and grandsons from early childhood willard was a keen observer was interested in things mechanical and finding out the cause and operation he attended the public schools of this city and was studious and agreeable at the time of his father a death he v BBS as just thirteen years of age and with his brother ralph began at once to share with their mother the responsibility of providing tor for the family he taking the work at home while ralph went from home to work realizing it was impossible for him to continue in school after be he had completed the bill grade willard submitted cheerfully remarking that at least be lie could not be kept from reading this course he has and constantly pursued and though be his never made a public demonstration of his knowledge one only needed to converse with him to learn how well informed he kept himself both on scriptural subjects and on general topics of the day he familiarized himself with the lives of such men as washington and lincoln and others of early history as well as those of 0 the present day and found great pleasure in flitting their teachings and sayings into his own life and the lives of those about him he ile did some writing himself including several short poems but because of his natural reserve few outside of his family knew of his abilities along these lines he has been active in M I 1 A work in the st george west ward and has responded cheerfully to every call made upon him for church or community service he was an elder in the priesthood at an early age he manifested a keen interest in things political and gave this subject constant study he ile was always sincere and broad in his political convictions as well as in ill his religion which he made a part of his dally daily life at the time of hia his death he was serving as democratic precinct chairman of precinct no 11 in disposition he was quiet unassuming and congenial and was highly regarded by friends and neighbors because of these fine personal qualifications those who knew him intimately enjoyed his cheerful meeting all situations hia his apt and humorous repartee in conversation and his fine unselfish consideration of everyone about him his death comes as a complete shock to the people of the community at large few being aware of his illness truly one of god a good men has been called home funeral services were held hold in the stake tabernacle saturday afternoon conducted by bishop james jame mcarthur the speakers were elders thomas P cottam albert E miller and james mcarthur interment was made in the city cemetery cene cerie tery elder B jarvis sr dedicating the grave |
