me clara refused to become interested la in ana anything thing it was that afternoon that the men accompanied by her father who had left business early arrived ai rived to install the very fine radio instrument why my dear well uell be able to listen to havana honolulu mr burns was ras as pleased as punch over ever his new toy and clara was amused at him in spite of herself after a few hours of work the corn com radio outfit was ras installed and by evening the whole family was gath ered about while mr burns tuned up and experimented and raved and ex the ways and wherefore of it all he ire had bad gathered all the programs he be could find in the papers and one by one he got snatches of their numbers ever over the wireless it was several evenings before the father was ras successful in getting a really enjoyable clear program from any distance little by little even clara became interested and finally she took enough notice to try to get some particular number on a program she had bad seen announced she was ras alone by the fire one eve ning ming in the big living room when she suddenly heard some Rond wonderful erful bari barl tone notes she lost the wave and was unable to get the station again from alch which the sager s nger was broadcasting it was strange how those few deep rich notes lingered in her memory she had gone so far as to look up the singer s name and now she was watch ing every announcement tor for its reap bearance pe arance she hoped he would sing again some night when the family was out so that she might enjoy it in soil soll tude it was a ridiculous wish tor for her unromantic almost prosaic clara burns burris and she admitted it to her saner self at last she saw his name and fate or some bind hind fairy betook her father and mother to bed early ill remain down here dad and Us lis ten to the program tonight she said casually as her parents said good night she scattered drift driftwood nood powder on the logs in the fireplace lighted the candles turned out the electricity and sat down after adjusting the inspru ment and tuning in with the station from which her singer was broadcast ing she almost laughed aloud as she thought of the way her own stage was set but it amused her and it was better than toddling off to bed to re read ad a stupid book or get sleep she did not need at last she heard the golden notes if clara recognized a thrill when it approached her she believed she was being really thrilled by the wonder of that voice and then the fact that the owner of it was several hundred miles away occurred to her yet it was wonderful when he had finished singing and the program continued clara found herself quite uninterested she arose and switched off if sae bile could not hear that voice again she would hear noth fag ing do you suppose he Is young she asked herself she sat for a long time looking into the varicolored flames curling out of the sow now crumbled logs she was try ing to see the ees of the man who could sing in such a gloriously con evincing way when she awoke the next morning it was A with ith the memory of that voice in her ears how silly she said to herself he ile may be married he Is probably fat and oh I 1 im in sure I 1 should be disillusioned if I 1 should see him lim but the memory persisted she could not riot concentrate on anything she tried to do it would be ordinary 1 I no found that she could no longer keep to herself the secret romance bhe she had found utterly absorbing her she must talk it over and find a way la in which she might at least see the owner of the voice why the haste up here asked her ter friend when she had been almost pushed into a chaise longue in clara s own room because I 1 myself am perfectly nad mad olver 01 er a voice I 1 have been hearing over the radio and you o 0 alone can help me fo to find out about the man who owns it she told the whole story and alea wl ea she Ind finished her friend looked at her in astonishment her eyes danced
