Show AMIS eis NOS mm HINT R LIFE UR hurricane september 10 james humphries died sept 6 1923 at hurricane utah bro humphries was born in the town of Bradt Drad ordon fordon avon wilts england march 28 1831 when 19 years of age he went to australia he only had six shillings to start housekeeping with when he landed in australia this was in dec 1850 just harvest time in that country he did pretty well there in 1854 mormon elders were preaching the gospel there II 11 HP accepted it and was baptised baptized sed nov 4 of same year he then got the zion fever and set sail early in april sickness death and desertion of his wife made him feel very desolate three years and eight months from the time he left home he had been to australia sailed tor for zion and was stranded on the sandwich islands lost one child and came to california his wife and deserted him taking his other child with her leav ing him a lone man in a strange world he traveled miles on toot foot to utah stayed in the southern part for some time then went to salt lake in 1861 he married dolly if alien allen in the spring of 1863 came to dixie he suffered the hardships of early pioneering in this country living on cane seed bread fighting indians building roads and ditches he was living in virgin when there three years he was appointed sexton and soon after was appointed secretary to care for the many donations that were given at that time he was secretary of the united order with bro george isom in 1884 he was ward clerk in 1886 and worked in this capacity 25 years 23 years with out pay he was 38 years sexton and never received one dollar af ter the move to hurricane he was presiding elder over the virgin branch he later came to hum hurr cane he was then an old man of the last union there were nine children five boys and four girls those that survive are james humph nes ries of idaho falls idaho mrs oscar burke shelly idaho mrs tillie clark panguitch utah jos W john A and frank L humphries of this place and edward humphries ol 01 hinckley utah funeral services were held in the public school building the speak ers were elders john N hinton james jepson geo H isom ira E bradshaw bradshaw R P woodbury and frank barber all spoke of the ex life of bro humphries in berment was made in the hurricane cemetery elder frank reber dedi bated the grave bro humphries was 92 years old |
