Show for PRES 1 he people of this city gathered at the stake tabernacle sunday at 2 p in to reverence our late president bairen G harding and to listen to words of appreciation as voiced by a number of our leading citizens the tabernacle was tastefully decorated in the national colors interspersed with touches of black crepe and the program rendered was especially ap prop nate to the occasion elder joseph T atkin presided and president david II 11 cannon offered the opening prayer how firm A foundation sung by the con grega tion and nearer my bly god to thee rendered by the choir prepared the hearts of the people tor for the words of appreciation comfort and hope which were then given mayor albert E miller spoke on president harding s administration aftel eulogizing the administration of harding hardings s predecessor woodrow wilson and expressing the thought that while each administration has a certain work to perform and that god overrules the destiny of this na jion lion he portrayed our president presidents s rise from a poor farmer boy to the president of the united states elect ed with a greater majority of votes than had ever before been given a presidential candidate he showed the wisdom of the man in the tion of his cabinet the courage of the man in vetoing the soldier soldiers s bon us bill when it was not clear how the money would be raised he told of how the government debt had been reduced and government expenses cut how a budget system had been established and above all how through the arms conference con at washington D C nov 11 1921 the tae anglo japanese treaty had been scrapped war postponed and navy armaments reduced it can truly be said of president harding that he upheld the constitution of the united states elder john T woodbury sr eulogized the life and character of president harding he recalled how just recently we had gathered to b d him welcome to our county and how we ne had thrilled with the words of commendation that came from him when he upheld the accomplishments of our own pioneers warren hard ing always did have faith in the peo pie and the people trusted him he was energetic magnanimous and courageous he was not a shouter he was not given to bluster but he went quietly along the path of duty and performed the herculean tasks that confronted him his life is ex amplified in the poetic lines then give to the world the best that you have and the best will come back to you elder arthur F miles voiced our hope in the future by emphasizing the tact fact that this is but the dawning of a better day that what god has so nobly begun will not be allowed to perish but will be carried on by man to an ultimate fruition he repeat ed the psalm of david and extracts from cardinal newman s majestic hymn lead kindly light and then pictured man s power to grow by reading dr frank crayon s esay a man ia is a worm but what a worm walt whitman s tribute to abra ham lincoln oh captain my cap tain so fitting an expression of our present grief was ably read by mrs mae mcallister and president mckin ley s favorite hymn lead kindly light was aas beautifully rendered by the ladies chorus of the west ward closing prayer was offered by el der joseph T atkin |
