national parks service henry W lunt state road commissioner randall L jones lecturer tor for U P system and the parry bros gronway and chauncey of cedar city the commissioners and the editor were guests of the party sunday and monday A meeting was held around a huge camp fire sunday night the total population of springdale appeared to be present and several from rockville and other places altogether there was in excess of people present bishop thornton hepworth ot of springdale conducted the meeting and opened it by all present singing 0 ye mountains high prayer was offered up by elder marvelous marve loua scenery and among you good people we have come here to do things and we want you to cooperate with us we intend to erect a large and beautiful hotel on the spot where here ve me are now standing it will be two stories high and three hundred feet long in the center will be an octagonal tower in which will be a set of bells and the first tune this set of bells will chime will will be the beautiful song that you sang first tonight from this tower will extend five live wings each feet long longi the hotel will be built of native stone quarried in this canyon and taken out so as is not to mar the beauty of the canyon native lumber from the zion ledges will be used everything including labor that can be had here will be used the union pacific system wants the people here to have the benefit of this work we want your cooperation in every way nay possible we will give you a square deal in everything and we want square dealing in return when the hotel ia is finished we shall want your chac chickens ens turkeys fruit etc probably all you can raise we do not want to send outside for these things advised the people to make their homes as attractive as possible along the route especially by having neat fences well trimmed trees neat gardens etc sir mr lancaster also advised the people to treat the travelers with kindness and courtesy the hotel must bs be finished this year this hotel will be the means of bringing in from two to three million dollars into this county within two or three years but we must have good roads mr lancaster finished his talk by saying I 1 thank god to be here tonight and take part in this wonderful meeting mr goodwin spoke of the allurement of the park which made him biant aaa to come here he was always pleased to come here and other places said none had impressed him as had zion cannon canyon zion appeared just as god made it I 1 am glad to be here good roads are an absolute necessity to bring in the great number of people for their great efforts la in bringing this about said the grading was now being done for the lund cedar railway which would be finished the coming tall fall referring to the requests of mr basinger
