Show ali MI GETS washington march 2 zion park gets the appropriation for roads and trails by reason of the agreement of the conference corn com cittee today to the smoot amend ment to the deficiency bill which was adopted by the senate yesterday A majority of the house members of the conference committee abandoned representative madden in his fight on this appropriation after listening to an argument by senator smoot and voted with the senate conferees to retain the item the money will become available as soon as the bill Is signed by the president and will re main available until expended up to june 30 0 1924 the language of the amendment as agreed to follows for construction reconstruction widening surfacing of necessary highways trails and bridges in zion national park including 40 tor for the construction of a bridge across virgin river outside the park 1 not only does this appropriation assure a fairly adequate road and trail system within zion park and a bridge across virgin river which makes the beginning of a federal road to the north rim of the grand canyon but it makes sure the carrying forward this season of the union pacific a plan to build a hotel at zion park costing from to president carl gray of the union pacific when in washington the early part of this week was manifestly perturbed by the then dark outlook tor for the zion park road appropriation pria tion and said that the union pa cefic had already set aside the money necessary to build the hotel but that at the time the funds were the union pacific had understood congress would provide the funds tor for roads and trails in the park what would have happened to the hotel project had the roads appropriation been defeated is conjectural but president gray said enough to just justi fy ty the assertion that hotel cori construe tion will go ahead coincident with the road construction authorized in the pending bill because senator smoot was tied up with the reclassify ift cation bill be fore the senate today he was not nam ed a member of the conference corn com matee which considered senate amendments to the deficiency bill but when the conferees met this morning senator smoot went before them and made a strong appeal tor for the reten aeten tion dionot of his amendment the senate conferees were naturally expected to support the amendment but chairman madden true to his promise opposed it washington march 3 both houses of bf congress having agreed to the conference report on the deficiency bill the appropriation of tor for roads and trails in zion park is now assured and the money will be available monday salt lake tribune |
