Show LIVING THOUGH drad e the subject of the following sketch is a nephew of the lite late james andrus of this city the article Is copied from student lite life the organ of the utah agricultural college stu dents one of the best examples of what 1 some of the federal men at school have done is exemplified in the life of lester andrus better known as snakes snakes has a death certificate tacked up in his room and has been notified that he has a grave in the argon region where be he ought fought he ile says that he expects his bones to arrive most any time lester Is a brother ot of lenord lucy laura and anna wh who 0 with 6 himself made up the andrus family I 1 that were at school last year he awas was born in spanish fork and Is very E well known by all the people there as a lire live wire and a booster he at tended the spanish fork high school but gave up his educational endeavors to join the infantry on april 24 1917 he trained in the united states only one month then was sent directly to france where he soon found his way to the front he fought in the st mehael and in the argon until he was wounded snakes was in the thickest of the bloody work and saw in a glod many places the results ot of the beastly cruelty ot of the germans machine gun nests were like hops on a one among barbed wire entanglements entangle ments i the day the calamity came he had a sprained ankle taut abut that did not stop him he and alif captain roused out early and left i 4 cave just a little before it got a vollye of fire that left nothing in pieces larger than an inch square bullets were flying in all directions ions the job was to capture the machine gun nests so snakes and about twelve men with him were given the privilege ot of making the attempt The first capture was a nest with two officers and tea ten men in it then four more nests and several shell holes were ere captured making a total of over three hundred captives in one day the last trial was made by snakes and his closest friend in spite of the utmost care the hun spied them the grass made a fairly good protection but it was wall impossible to keep the pack out of sight and one bullet went through the jaw and another through the left chest ot of snakes he gave bis his belongings to his companion and tried tved to die and was thought to be dead by the rest of bis company six days were passed in agony with nothing to put in bis his mouth except a can ot of tomatoes hen the ambulance did finally pick him up he was taken out three different times on the road to the hospital because they thought be he was dead in the meantime his mother received his death certificate and two payments othis ot his governmental life insurance but luckily mrs andrus borrow sorrow was not to las last for lester ivas given the best medical attention available and when discharged from the hospital in washington D i C it was said that the work done on i his wounds was the most remarkable of f any that had been seen up to that time ime j snakes Is a active student in the life of the school and bis his friends are thankful for the miracle that saved him A |
