Show SOMETHING BERRI SPRING BENCH berry spring bench has had a checkered career soon boon after the first settlement in dixie the berry spring was located and the land on the bench above it used as a herd ground washington was thirteen years old and st george had been settled only nine years when the lands of berry spring flat were surveyed and formally opened tor for entry in 1870 from that date till 1918 the splendid land was subject to entry and was in tact fact entered a number of times but because of the failure to get water these entries had to be abandoned the fine open lands of the fiat flat offer advantages as fruit farms over anything else in dixie and it is not often that such tempting offers go with without out takers as was presented to the settlers here by those desirable lands since 1918 however the door has been closed to all comers at the U S land office and they have been told that entry was refused on account of the dixie project everyone was told that it was the next thing to useless to try to get the project set aside and filings were uniformly rejected several applications were made tor for a some ome of the withdrawn lands and the customary answer returned when the question was taken up with our representatives in congress none of them gave any hope of having the dixie project set aside except senator senater reed smoot who at once took up the question with the secretary of in la perlor hon john barton payne who asked him what hla his wishes in the matter were after making a searching invest gallon gation as to the advisability of the move through a correspondence of over a year senator smoot has finally recommended that the entire dixie project be thrown open to entry once more and this will be done As has been the practice since the war however the soldier and bailor sailor boys of the war will be given preference rights over the general public tor for 60 days accordingly august 16 1921 has been set as the day tor for opening the unclaimed lands ot of berry spring flat to entry again tor for soldiers and sail ors only and on october IS 18 1921 the general public will be given leave to enter any lands then unclaimed practically all of the plain land ot of berry spring flat has already been applied tor for but there are still choice pieces here and there that will yet be taken and made into splendid fruit farms A hundred second feet ot of water has been allowed by the state engineer for these lands and a united el at tort fort Is now being made by all the friends of dixie to get this water out onto the land under the corporation of the berry spring irrigation company with an office la in st george an announcement of the marriage of mr air leroy H cox and miss bliss lillian orton at salt lake city july alth has been received by the news the bride is a daughter of mr and mrs orson 0 orton of parowan carowan or fang pang editor not sure which the groom Is a son of mr and mrs henderson cox of this city and is a young man of exemplary character who is highly respected here the news joins in all good wishes |
