Show wesley king infers we work against zion park conviction that prompt and decisive action on the part of progressive citizens of salt lake and utah generally will be required to place before the motoring public a knowledge of the scenic beauties of bryce canyon and the zion national park Is expressed by wesley E king who has lust just returned from a trip to dixieland mr air king declares that after this journey which took him as far south as st george and beaver deaver city he found motorists from distant points passing through these cities and engaged in sightseeing for pleasure who had never been advised of the existence ot of either bryce canyon or zion national park and who had been directed to proceed through utah on to the grand canyon of the colorado before they would find and anything worth stopping tor for for this condition ot of affairs sir air king ring places the blame upon the shoulders ot of the southern california automobile association some of the hotel men man of southern utah and the I 1 I 1 citizens generally who tall fall to do all in their power to make known what utah has to offer the sightseer in the way of unrivaled scenic grandeur he lie has taken the matter up with the commercial club and the utah state automobile association both of which organizations have written replies outlining their work in this regard forwarding copies to the governor of utah in his letter to the commercial club under date of june 7 mr king sets out that while passing through beaver city en route to zion national park he met mr and mrs H A lane of oklahoma city and mr and mrs W A jones of joplin mo ito mr and mrs airs lane had left their home come some weeks ago by auto going along I 1 the santa fe trail visiting the grand canyon then on to los angeles where they stopped at the offices ot at the southern california automobile association to make inquiry about the eights sights and roads back through utah and california tourists Tou riste bot at informed these travelers says mr air king ero given maps of the arrowhead trail but were told nothing about the zion park or bryce canyon he says they stopped at the snow hotel la fit st george but were told nothing about these places and when asked by mr mrs king if they had seen these those I 1 places professed utter ignorance of their existence answering tor for the commercial club secretary nathaniel jackson bays save that he believes there is no other national park or any scenic attraction in the united states which has had so much publicity as its zion na liodal and bryce canyon he points to the work done by mr king him self 1 and to publicity la in motor land motor age and other magazines mr jackson addest it if any highway exists which is attempting to misdirect or cloud directions to our scenic wonders with the opening of the tourist season it should be given our most vigorous attention speaking tor for the utah state automobile N association manager W D A rishel nishel writes I 1 you simply fe reiterate iterate a fact that this office has known tor for years we have called attention to this deplorable lack of knowledge of at one of greatest wonders in the press in public and la in private utterances we have met with considerable opposition itt in our efforts to put zion national park on the map as far as our foreign or out of state tourists are concerned charges utahna oppose work 1 I may surprise you to know that our greatest opposition comes from residents of our state we shall continue continuo the fight until we have won until every tourist crossing the state of utah from north to south or south to north will know that there is I 1 such a place as ge zon national park in utah lah and that it is located upon the zion park highway bumming summing up the situation and suggesting action that he believes will prove drove efficacious mr king eaid said bryce canyon which I 1 hope bib renat renamed Aed and the tho zion national park are worth millions of in jn real money to salt lake and utah ne e can get got the money out of factly in proportion rO to the inteli gent effort we vie put into proper channels of publicity I 1 when I 1 met mr air and mrs airs H A lane ot of oklahoma city and mr air and mrs W A jones ot of joplin mo alo at the hotel in beaver deaver city on my return from a visit to bryce canyon and zion national park and they told me that they had rounded the circle by auto from oklahoma driving over the santa fe trail to los angeles and along the arrowhead trail from los angeles to beaver deaver without even having heard ot of these two Nond wonderful erful scenic attractions when they were actually out looking tor for regions of that sort to visit I 1 dropped several bitter tears on the road right there we are allowing many thousands of dollars to slip through our fingers by not making sure that this sort of thing could not possibly happen it salt lake cannot afford to spend the necessary money to place booklets in the various offices and hotels where tourists can get them and thus be advised of these two and other scenic attractions then no business firm in salt lake can afford to advertise any of its goods for sale we own these things from a selling standpoint and every dollar spent in the state by an outsider coming to see them ie to a dollar tor for us it is our dollar it appears that when these tourists I 1 have referred to visited the offices of the southern california automobile association they asked for a routing back home through utah colorado etc and they put the straight question what ie Is there to see on the way and were answered nothing until 3 iou ou get got into colorado 4 1 I do not know what it will cost to bring it about but whatever the cost we should see to it that the next traveler stopping in those offices down in los angeles is fully advised what opportunity tor for sightseeing utah affords these people also told me they stopped at a hotel in st george conducted by joseph snow and the subject of visiting these points was not mentioned although they let it be known that they were on a touring and sightseeing trip it these attractions could be stolen from us or taken away we woul I 1 fully deserve to lose them and never I 1 get the millions of dollars that they would bring it properly advertised we can remedy the existing condition by doing the following things first name the road from los angeles to salt lake the zion park highway second make a park out of B bryce ryce canyon and give it a now name third include the north rim of of the grand canyon in our program of adler advertising fourth raise the money in the streets of salt lake and throughout the state to effectively make it possible for anybody in america looking tor for scenery to find out all about these attractions at any place and any time |
