Show cherries to salt lake demand for more bishop samuel isom of hurricane a and nd joseph gubler of la verkin cooperating with the county farm bureau re au shipped four tons of cherries to the hancock fruit produce co salt lake they sold as boon soon aa as put on the market for per pound and an al a telegram was received by the county agent to furnish more more which unfortunately he be could not do on account of the limited supply barely tor for the home market this Is the first shipment of fruit to the hancock co col made by the farm bureau and Is highly satisfactory from every point of view the fruit arrived at salt lake in splendid condition this Is very encourage ing to our fruit growers and will undoubtedly stimulate them to further action the more especially it if shipments of peaches which are to be made later to the same company meet with as good a reception greensboro peaches will be shipped to salt lake later in this month the farm bureau has already received 2000 crates tor for these and 1000 more crates have been ordered for the greensboro shipment these peaches it if properly sized and packed bill ill readily sell at good prices and it will be found as in the case of the cherries that we are not able to supply the demand our people have had uphill work in the matter of selecting the kind of fruit best suited tor for northern marketa markets and then putting it on the market in fit good shape experiments along these lines have been costly especially to the hurricane growers the growers however are not of the easi ly discouraged kind and they persevered until it now looks as it they are about to reap the reward of their efforts system in picking packing and shipping is now realized to be the main factor in capturing a market and system must be followed and improved on to hold the market once it is captured there must be no back sliding of the quality of the fruit there Is no question it Is superior or at least the peer of any grown anywhere on the face of the earth while only a few so far of our growers have successfully in the salt lake market others are watching 1 I them and their success means a genera general 1 awakening our main trouble seems to be that we do not produce sufficient of any one article to make a carload shipment on demand and this condition gives promise of speedy remedy on account of the reawakened interest improved roads have had much to do with the stimulus given the fruit industry in dixie and the roads will be steadily improved until in a few we shall have very fine roads truly prospects are good tor for the whole of dixie the farmers and fruit growers especially they have a splendid organization in the farm bureau and should give it their full and hearty support for it means much to them the county agent la is a live wire full of energy and push and what hat Is more to the point he knows the needs of the farmers and is devoted to their interests great is dixie her advantages are so many that it would take columns of print to recount them her disadvantages are BO so few as to be hardly worth recording lets all work tor for her and help her to attain the place we are ambitious to see her occupy a place in the very front rank |
