Show road convention A big success the tri state road convention held in the tabernacle here last friday was a big success both the forenoon and afternoon sessions were well attended and much enthusiasm was shown those present from salt lake were governor simon bamberger state engineer mcgonagle judge S R thurman judge joshua greenwood william farrell joseph decker C claud robert patrick bp woodruff mr faus of the faus drug co api dpi dolan max Otten helmer and carl bartholomew from las vegas nev S W griffiths mr henderson mr farnsworth and E E smith others present were prea day of doollittle of lund the meeting was called to order by pres E H snow who read the official call and explained the object sought judge D H morris was selected as permanent of the and joseph smith of fillmore secretary governor bamberger spoke on what utah Is doing tor good roads said the state had created bonds for road building purposes but these could not be marketed at this time except at a loss the state would have money tor road building and other purposes 1 the constitutional amendment relating to the taxation of mines and mining property was voted for at the coming election he was in favor of a straight road through the county with feeders etc but bonds would not be issued at this time will d all in his power to carry out the wishes of the people A splendid talk was made by will G farrell on the commercial advantages of the arrowhead trail he told of what he had seen on the santa fe trail one car per minute passing in an eight hour day he thought the idea of cars per season over the arrowhead trail not an exaggerated one and each car bould leave at a most conservative estimate 16 per day in towns where stops were made he referred to the marvelous scenery of this section also the hospitality of the people said we must change the dangers of the desert to the delights of the desert the people must all cooperate and unite in the building of good individuals doing what they can when there Is a bad place in the road judge greenwood spoke on the relationship of the arrowhead trail to agricultural development he said we must have men who understand the building of good roads and not men appointed on account of some political debt the people in this end of the state are entitled to the traffic because for years they kept the road open and mostly at their own expense he referred to dixie as the most attractive spot in america and finished with god the building of the arrowhead trail allford day of carowan parowan said he was vitally interested in the good roads movement the people must cooperate to attain success A J henderson of las vegas nev said through cooperation the arrowhead trail across the continent will be made the greatest road in istance david hirschl of rockville toll of what the people of Sp ringdale and rockville had done in improving the road to alon canyon they had donated 2000 in work recently putting in 24 stone bridges and other vegas suggested as a financial start that each delegate pay into the treasury the sum ot 2 68 was turned into the treasury mr griffiths proposed that there be a telephone every ten miles between st george and las vegas so that a traveler should be at no time more than five miles from a telephone he extended a hearty welcome to all to visit at las vegas jos S snow ot st george stated that st george and tributary territory was heartily in favor of good roads and had proven this by donating work and in the roads in conclusion ho offered the following resolution which was unanimously adopted to the utah state highway commission gentlemen the A r r 0 w h ead trail improvement and development respectfully requests your honorable body to initiate a survey of anat portion of the arrowhead trail between kanab utah and the arizona state a proper locating engineer and further requests that construction of a permanent character be undertaken as soon as war conditions permit on all portions of the arrowhead trail found improperly located or requiring improvement to care for industrial traffic convention adjourned |
