Show dixie fruit festival most successful ever fhe dixie fruit festival sept 11 12 and 13 was pronounced the best ever held here there was the largest number ot visitors the city has ever had and those 0 mature age were greatly in the majority two or three years ago it would have seemed that so many autos would be here at one time most of the visitors came in their own autos and there was a great number of them the sports and other entertainments were good and clean were praised by our visitors and greatly enjoyed one of the biggest attractions was the ladies mountain echo band of ephream there were eighteen of the young ladles of this organization present and their conductor and they certainly did splendid they gave a concert on wednesday night an immense crowd gathering about the platform to enjoy it they played at the reception to the governor at gatherings at the sports at the fruit feast and they never seemed to tire they were very willing and their conduct is deserving of all praise we all greatly enjoyed their visit and we believe they also had a good time here and enjoyed it we hope they may come again our own band did splendidly as they always do under direction of prof earl bleak they took turns with the visiting band in everything the band Is deserving of great for their excellent work the single roping was won by bert second prize being won by will chandley bert won first in double roping walter taking second prize on the third day thomas andrus won the prize tor double roping in the horse races the one half mile was won by wm atkalns mare goldfinch the quarter mile by will sor ansons baldy and the three eighths mile by jos W princes ranger the fruit exhibit was very fine and was greatly admired especially by the visitors great cred it is due to john of this city for the display of fruit he made the great varity and per of this exhibit Is beyond praise leeds made a splendid showing the exhibit being large and of great variety including pea chesi pears grapes raspberries rasp berries currants almonds pomegranates melons bottled fruit dried apples and peaches prunes apples and english walnuts santa clara bad a very fine lot of fruit and made a very good showing bishop I 1 C macfarlane had a very fine individual exhibit of a variety of choice fruits prizes were awarded as follows st george east vs st george west st george west won the silver loving cup and the prize santa clara vs hurricane santa clara winner leeds vs leeds won best 25 watermelons water melons won by 0 S taylor of beaver dam best 16 wat er melons won by riley C savage of silver farm best single water melon 0 S taylor winner best individual display john Sch muta st george best grapes luther hemenway st george best peaches J M moody leeds best apples edward R frei santa clara best pears plumes and prunes john st george best pome gradates gra nates mrs mary lang st george best seedless raisins clifford sullivan bt george best dried peaches B F pendleton st george best bottled fruit mrs annie johnson st george best irrigated corn howard miller st george best dry land corn heber empey st george best dry land wheat albert graf santa clara there was also a greatly admired exhibit of bottled peaches and fags from the southern utah packing co this fruit appearing clear and perfect in fact it could not be put up more attractively there was a good exhibit of dry land products from wolf hole made by roy bentley which showed the great possibilities of that section the decorations and general taste used in arranging the exhibits deserving of much commendation the concert given friday night by musical of the dlos colesa vas grand each number being heartily applauded bi the audience the building was crowded to its limit many standing at the doors who could not gain admission the concert consisted of euloge iron oborn a vw patriotic and standard numbers instrumental numbers being interspersed with the vocal prot jos W mc allister Al llster and prof earl J bleak are to be congratulated on the big success of the concert velch was a great exhibit 0 the splendid work being carried on at the dixie normal college the fruit feast which took place immediately after the concert friday night was greatly enjoyed the melons were cut up and fruit placed on paper mabbe plates in the basement of the tabernacle and passed through the doors and windows to boy and girl scouts who passed it around the crowd awaiting outside the grounds were lit up seats arranged and soon the crowd was eating juicy dixie watermelon grapes and other fruit the quality of the fruit was greatly admired by the visitors it is estimated that not less than 2000 partook of the feast and they surely enjoyed it there was considerable fruit left over which was handed over to the local red cross sisters who disposed of it the next day it was altogether the best fruit festival ever held in dixie and all who in any way helped in making it such a big success are to be congratulated |
