Show proposed to reclaim much good land the addition of 25 to 35 acres of irrigable land to the agricultural acreage of utah 8 dixie is the most recent good word out of the southern country the sevier river irria irrigates tes annual ay y loo acres acre s of the land the rio virgin with a greater run off irrigates about acres recently it has been found leas ible to get this water by a system of canals an I 1 reservoirs upon many thousands of acres of rich land in washington county counti utah and mo ITO hae baie county anz ariz while the re cla mation of the land arid is recognized rec as a stupendous undertaking its it promise in returns has already en ell cou raged a beginning and arid work on the venture has as already been begun be gun the la a id is in the vicinity of hurricane ind and of a nature similar to that recently reclaimed under the hurricane while it is suited to the rai raising ing of varied pro ducts that the dixie climate makes possible the theory is advanced that it will prove most valuable for raising crops especially alfalfa to be used in feeding stock it is pointed out that lambs fro from in dixie can be placed upon the east ern market several weeks earlier thin than from the northern lambing lambin g grounds and that they therefore com command mandi n higher price in the past the sheep men of dixie have been hanh capped in the matter of emergency feed provision and therefore have been limited in their output the fact that the territory doled for reclamation is contiguous to the great dry firm belt that is being developed and that it is in t the he way of a any n ir kosgi possible ble rail railroad road in lit e to the alabab forest makes it a closely related part park of the empire that is of recent years being viewed in an optimistic light and that for many years was but the dream of the settlers of washington c county unav the value of the billions of feet of timber in the forest must eventually arce f the building of a railroad through to the heart of dixie in the opinion pinion of those n who ho aie are loyal to the semi tropical corner of the state but the reclamation of the land I 1 not dependent upon the building of a railroad say those who are ac quain quainter ted with the situation while the project to impound and store the waste waters f the rio virgin through a system of canals and ies er airs promises to develop power suitable for use in the operating ot of an electric line or for other power purposes oddly enough the tract of land is not far revved rem ived from the wealth producing country of the once famous sliner reef N hile the precious metal was being glean ed f aiom t orn the ancient petrified forest it lay valueless val uless in the eyes of the metal hunters now it pro promises in aises to come into its real value the possibilities of the extensive tract and arid the chance of its reclaim alion by irrigation are reflected by a recent report upon it made by clarence b jams jarvis a civil engineer ot of this city mr jarvis was em aloyed to make a reconnaissance survey by the dixie Irrig irrigate ati n corn coin pany undertaking reclamation of the tract after several n months of investigation he I 1 became convinced the project is feasible concerning the country and the possibilities of its and development mr jarvis spoke briefly as follows this project includes some 25 00 acres oi of tillable land lying west ward from the hurricane Hurn Hurlic cane ane fault in ashington county counts utah and mo have count anz ariz the land lies at an average elevation of feet above ea level and the is milland mild and airm just the topical dixie climate rh soil ranges from chy clay loam to an I 1 and gravelly goirn the litter tp tip being mo most mot t adapted for the fotion of tl e gf mi from st george the fliter mater supply is to be taken from the N irgin river in which the total flow during tl ti e average year exceeds the discharge f the sevier river ind and the san pitch river at gunni on in order to make use ue u e of the greater part i f tl ti e flood water a system of reservoirs will ultimate ly iv have to be constructed capable of transforming the virgin river from the erratic and firul stream it no now is 14 to i I 1 more steady and regu river in connection with the irrigation development is an op y for a power development about equal to the olmstead power plant on provo rivet when the freight ton nage and passenger traffic shall warrant the construction of a r nil III road into this section of the coan try and through the alabab forest to the grand canyon ot of the colora do the requisite of this power dower can be generated about along this railroad line for electrical operation the immense iron and coal depos its in iron county are along the only feasible line fo the railroad that will at some date serve the dixie country while the main canal line of the dixie will in volve considerable rock tunnel and side hill construction the increased cost on this account will he be amply justified by tl e increased abety safety and dependability of the canal system the company has legun active work along the line ot of one of the laterals that can be served by the extension of the present hurricane canal in order to serve temporarily the desert entries bing directly southwesterly from the town of hurricane plans are nearing corn com tor for the larger emst
