Show home from tour to grand canyon ile headed aided by pre president ident IV P 1 jen fw f w ell and sm IV C stark of the salt lake commercial club members of that institution and rit alroid troad offic llis who left salt like about tilo weeks leeks i iga on the yellowstone grand cannon automobile trio tru ic il turned 11 lt 4 night gilt tired but enthusiastic over oner tho the journel and the excellent prospects prospect for good roads between beten here and the grand canyon the party found fairly good roads road i bet between ireen here liere and st george and hurricane but f from there on oil much work will have to be done they met with a royal Nelc welcome every and found the farmers coger c to do all they could in ahn way of building and improving roads data as to the automobile route will mill be prepared and distributed throughout the tile country and with inith good roads assured all along the route heavy automobile travel is expected to result next N ear in an interview today president jenn had the follon follo ing to say concerning the unique journey just completed after leaving nephi for miles we traveled through that part of the state lying away from railroads all the way from 30 to miles a part of the state that has never been visited bv by delegates from the tile balt lake city commercial club and we received a condei fully en ell thuela tic welcome all along the line I 1 art am greatly impressed with the enter enterprise and progressive spirit of the people living in these corn muni ties but I 1 am sure this spirit all be greatly encouraged and enhanced by our visit isit such localities as bt george hurricane and kan ab and that section of the state which has been settled for 40 keais or more certainly should receive attention f from the ret of us and be encouraged at least with good road which I 1 am sure will till be fol followed loed by b railroad building returning we came by it nay ay of circleville Cir cleville richfield and manti and found a splendid road for miles and I 1 am greatly impressed with the road improve ment which hae taken place in the more elett settled led parts of our state during the past four years also with vall the fact that good roads cin can bo be built and maintained in this state at a comparatively small expense by reason of good road mateal available everywhere and climate this is the lat automobile excursion elir sion the tile club will conduct this 3 ear we hive have covered miles in this state over the lincoln highway west ot of silt salt like lake tho tile pikes peik peak highway through the unta uinta basin and the grand canyon loid load from which we have hae just returned the roada roads through gli the uinta basin and grand canyon road run through territory tern tor not served by b railroads and I 1 believe the state of utah can well trell afford to imke make a supreme e effort f and legislate the till nece sao funds this winter so aa as to construct good high highways Nays through the uinta basin and from nephi to kanab the construction of this latter road will not devolve entirely on the state of utah as many miles of it run through arizona and through the indian reservation rese ration and the state of arizona and the united states goern government ment we lie b hive te every eiery reason to believe will come forward with the lif noc cessaro essary eions to perfect that p of the tile roid road in fact the tile government has built a good road for 74 miles from fre doma donia arizona which is within miles of kanab to the grand canyon of the colorado and 2500 per annum is 13 appropriated to further improve this road and keep it in good condition from braier and lund to at leist least two thirds of the distance the road runs through rich soil for dry funn ing or negated farming I 1 dilill leaveat leave at club samples ol 01 corn med raised this bummer at bhart creek 40 mile miles east of hurricane and two miles from the arizona line thit thib corn was baited by a Nt NiL braska homesteader and is equal to most corn found in the tile eastern corn states it was raided rai ed NN without irrigation through this section the rainfall infill ra all ill acrie a crape 11 to 12 inches per annum which is not i heavy rainfall for dry firming but the tile wonderful mond erful s of the soil up tip for this and I 1 a alo ao al o believe that there are in miny places an all underflow of water and man cha chances aces to const urt iut reser voi N so ai as to cone conre crie te adad patera naters and the 0 winter run rain or sno snowfall making it po possible isible to irrigate many sections ec tiong our dixie is wll known as a fruit rai r ing section and taid nono none too much araie lna has bet i given it I 1 have never cen veen findur simples of fruit than that pro luca lucca in st george hurricane Hurn Hur cine or that section and the flaar iq i yet at thid this time tho tile io loida ids arc are not flot good enough so tint that this fruit can in be hilled to market it a profit nor no r ii is it possible to haul grain or even ho hogs at a profit 11 ith later development dry farming is now being done with the special purpose in mind of feeding the product tobois to hogs which is 13 and will become a is condei ful industry in this slate state all ali of these things wo we saw 0 i our trip in addition to these resources there are mineral dep deposits oits coil coal deposits th alic wonderful kaibe forest and miles of varied scenic attee eions unequaled in grandeur with nith the final m it wonder onder the grand cannon canyon of the Col colorado orad at the end the m nnie grandeur of the grand cani cam on is 19 beyond besci eption there is 13 nothing like it in the entire is world orld and it is well inell worth a trip of e even ell months to aee ee the construction of a good highba over oer the road traer traversed sed with these wonderful i ties will open up this tills pirt part of the state to the tile will mill make it easier of access and will mill surely furnish a sur surprise price to thoe chrt have never seen it A good roid will make tins this country accessible and will furnish a means of transportation of all kinds of ign cul products that will encourage the settlement cauze parti il de elopement elop ment and in time insure the tile building of a railroad from the tile standpoint of commercial development the state of should consider this roid road and some means should be found of financing and building it chere is in in mind that the federal govern goern mert mait ma it take hold of railroad construction in ill such territory as this just described the federal government has undertaken the regulation of rate and also has taken control of our natural resources in such a way that the specula speculative tie features or rather the opportunity to secure the ownership of our natural resources as in former years have been remote from railroad construction these opportunities are tire not attract attractive i e from the standpoint of in investors estors because it will take froni five to ten tell years before a railroad constructed from lund utah to cedar city hurricane kanab and the tile grind grand cani canyon on will pay a re reasonable i ate late of inhere t on the investment in other words the tonnage is not there at present and the tonnage will mill not be there until the country is settled and produces the tile tonnage and the federal government being the principal awnet of thebo theta natural resources it can best afford and should by all manner of reasoning step forward and build a railroad and perhaps leae it on the bisig of two wo or three per cent on investment to one of the present operating enting op road I 1 note that a bill lias has been introduced in Con congress grebs by represent stives kryan of washington authorizing the federal government to build a railroad lail jail road from front marksville marysvale Marys vale ville I 1 till to tho the forest before action is 13 taken on a bill of tins this kind I 1 am arn sure that a route which will gerve the territory in southwestern utah will nill bo be thoroughly investigated because southwestern utah by reason of its altitude soil and mineral resources furnishes much in lucli greater possibilities ties and ii 11 only eight miles longer dedret De eret news |
