Show wants land grant congressman joseph howell introduced a bill in tho the house thursday to reimburse the state of otili with a grant of acres of land forthe for the expenses incurred in sup pre sing the indian disturb disturbances inces within the border of the state during the years from 1865 to 1868 according to the washington dispatch the bill which congressman hon hottell ell introduced reads is Ls follows section 1 that there is hereby granted and conveyed to the state of utah ono one million acres of agricultural lands to reimburse the state for expenses incurred in suppressing indian disturbances during the period from 1865 to 1868 hec see 2 that such linds shall be selected under the authority of the state land board within the period of fin five e i ears after the passage of this act and may be designated and selected from any lands that belong to the united states government within such state whether such lands be within or without the forest reserves the secretary of the interior is hereby author authorized authorised wed and directed to issue united states patent to said state as suon soon as the designation thereof has been certified to his office by bythe the gon governor arnor of s said state and such de designations ignitions shall be made by legal subdivisions of sun eyed lands and by metes and bounds of lands sec see 3 that tho the said lands shall be sold by the proper authority of said state at not less thin than per acre and not in greater amount than acres to any one individual or corporation and under such rules and regulations for the disposal thereof as may hereafter be provided by br the legislature of said state Fe federal feral recognition of the early struggles of the state tu to protect the citizens from the hostile bands of indians seems likely to meet with favor in both houses of congress the incident recalls the struggles ggles of the first settlers of the territory of utah in their efforts to suppress the lawless encroachments encroach ments of the different tribes of indians the matter of securing pensions for the indian fighters who braved death to protect their homes and the territory has occupied the minds of the utah delegation for a number of 5 years cars past it has been contended that these veterans deserve recognition by the govern ment just the same as the veterans of the mexican war or the civil var or other wars that the united states has engaged in it is the idea of conate aman hottell honell to see that the veterans of the indian wars will reap a full benefit from the let if it becomes a law in speaking of the matter he sacs it bould of course be a matter for the honor of the state legislature for the next few years providing this measure is passed to see that the money monel received from the sale of these lands is paid to the veterans of the indian campaigns in pensions in case the pension bill now before congress is passed the new now bill for the grant of acres of land will not bo be pushed as they arc are both directed towards the same end 11 despret news |
