Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett Garth Panter did it again. He t:Kk the Hays fight as a substitute sub-stitute and won going away. It was a nationally televised fight out of Detroit and the TV fees is about all the boys got for their efforts. As I have said before Garth will do all right If they keep him away from the cuties. I talked to Chick Oliver, the new Salt Lake promotor, and he tells me he is trying to get a name fighter for Panter in Salt Lake before the holidays. But without TV it will be rough to bring in any of the good boys. Football is just about over for another vear. with of course the bowl games still left. Skyline football got its biggest break with the Thanksgiving game between Utah and BYU being the nationally televised game of the week. The entire nation was thrilled by the play of the game and of course our natural scenery scen-ery came in for its share of publicity. pub-licity. Now if it is just possible for one ski meet to be televised from Alta, this nation will get to see the greatest ski terrain in this united States, and it is only 40 minutes from the heart of Salt Lake City. Of course Alta Al-ta is only one of the fine ski resorts re-sorts around Utah. Brighton is also one of the best. So here is hoping that something is done this winter to bring these places to the attention of a nation that is going in for winter sports as never before in its history. Basketball is in the pre-season stage and it looks like the new Utah coach will have a fair team. Gardner has a few boys back from last year with a fair sophomore sopho-more crop. Bet he would have liked to have had Eddie Gayth-waite, Gayth-waite, our Bingham boy. Eddie is in the service. The Aggies have the nucleus of a strong club, but Baker will again be hanicapped by lack of depth. Stan Watts at BYU has a team that will be the club to beat from Utah. He has lost Richey and Christensen and of course Jarman. They will be missed but he still has a good looking club. The prep fans got their first look at the highly publicized Pollard boy from Montana that moved to Utah so he could join Marv Jenson's stable of fighters in West Jordan. Of course the boy isn't a pro, he is just learning learn-ing the boxing game. He is 6 ft. 10 inches, about 235 pounds and still growing. He is enrolled at Jordan high and is playing basketball. bas-ketball. In his first game he played the first and last quarter and scored 13 points. So what the prep fans saw they liked. Our local high school team has been working out for about a week now under their new coach Udell Wankier, and I can tell you one thing the boys like him. Udell will have a fairly tall team and in Robertson a good play-maker. play-maker. Jack Mannion is ready to take his place with the good ones. Peterson looks like this might be his year. Julie Galle-gos, Galle-gos, Georgie Goris and Frank English are other good looking prospects. They have lined up a number of practice games. In these Coach Wankier will look at them all. So until then, be seeing you. AL " |
