Show CPT Program Here Largest In Vestern States Reports Miles Many Courses Included In Program Under Dixie-Ventura Schools By M. J. MILES CPT Ground School Instructor The current CPT program at the Dixie college is the largest in the history of the institution, and the largest program in the Western West-ern states. Ventura junior college and Dixie junior college have combined their elementary and secondary ground schools, wi t h 70 students in training. Of this group approximately approxi-mately 25 are Navy V-5 enlisted men. The remainder are enlisted en-listed in the Army air corps or enlisted reserve corps. Instructor Course Also In addition to this college program pro-gram there is an instructor course nearly completed by Basset t and Phelps, with the ground course given through the college. E. L. Anderson also has an instructor course with 5 students, and Bas-sett Bas-sett has an additional elementary instructor course with 5 students. The cross country course given by Bassett and Phelps is also underway and has a quota of 6 trainees. These operators have contracted with Dixie junior college col-lege for the ground school facilities facili-ties and instruction. These courses, witn the elementary ele-mentary and secondary courses sponsored by the colleges operating oper-ating here add up to 91 CPT trainees taking training off the local airport. In addition to this group there are four pilots taking tak-ing training on civilian status, bringing the total of pilots being trained here to 95. It can safely be said that St. George has the largest and best CPT program in the West, and the operators are working off one of the worst airports, from the standpoint of wind hazards and rough runway surface. The current effort being made by the city council and the county commissioners to improve the road will enable the college to continue with its present expanded expand-ed program. Envy of Other Towns The Chamber of Commerce and business people generally recognize recog-nize that this program is the envy of other communities, as it brings approximately $500,000 annually an-nually to St. George in flight and ground school contracts. With (Continued on page eight) CPT Program (Continued from first page) Cedar City in possession of a $400,000 new airport, it will take the united support of all civic and business groups to hold this program in St. George, in the face of the condition of the airport air-port road and runway. Efforts being made by local service clubs and individuals to make the trainees feel at home and welcome here are sincerely appreciated by everyone connected connect-ed with the program. |
