Show Mrs. Anna Meier Gubler Celebrates Birthday Celebrating her 81st birthday anniversary an-niversary Saturday. Oct. 2nd, is Mrs. Anna Meier Gubler of Santa; Clara. Her niece, Mrs. William Toblcr of Washington is arranging arrang-ing an afternoon dinner party at her home for a few relatives and close friends of Mrs. Gubler. Born in Herisau, Switzerland, Oct. 2nd, 1863, Mrs. Gubler was 25 years old before she joined the L. D. S. church, being baptized bap-tized Sept. 2, 1888. On Sept. 16, 1889, a year after her baptism, she embarked for America, reaching reach-ing New York City on her 26th birthday anniversary. She came straight to Santa Clara, where several of her relatives and friends were already located, and a few months after her arrival she married mar-ried John Gubler, a Swiss pioneer of 1861. Learned Many Arts As a girl in Switzerland, Anna Meier, learned many of the arts connected with Weaving, at which the Swiss were expert. " Her special spe-cial trade was weaving, and she worked in a factory for many years. She had an aptitude for handling the difficult machinery and over a long period directed a lace embroidery machine which weighed more than three tons. Thousands of yards of this lace and embroidery in various patterns pat-terns were manufactured by her on this machine and imported to America . She was also expert at knitting and sewing, and these arts helped her greatly in her new location. She can still knit and does most of her own plain sewing. Although her life as a pioneer Dixie woman demanded often, that she help in the fields and at other difficult tasks, she found time to do work also in the church, her major interest being the Relief Society, and genealogical work. She has spent many days of her later life at the St. George Temple, doing ordinance work for hundreds of her kinsfolk. Through all" the hard years she has developed de-veloped great patience and is praised for this attribute. Her eyesight is good and her memory is very keen. She enjoys reading the magazines and daily papers and recounts with interest events of her early life. , Her living children include; Miss Heeln Gubler, who has traveled trav-eled many years for Curtis Pub- lishing company; Mrs. -Harvey Frehner, Alamo, Nev.; Mrs. Harold Har-old Lockwood, San Frncisco; Louis Gubler of Salt Lake City; Ernest Gubler, Logandale; Hyrum and Laura Gubler of Santa Clara. She also has one younger brother and one sister living in Switzerland, from whom she has had no word for four years, due to military restrictions, but she hopes to hear from the magain when the war is over. |
