Show Car Thieves Arrested When Sheriff Shoots Tires off Car The tires were shot off Alfred Morris' car by Sheriff Antone B. Prince when the car thieves who were driving it failed to heed the warning to stop. The car, trailed by Sheriff Prince and Deputy Sheriff Lee Adams, raced through town on Tabernacle street just as crowds from the Lions club and shows were coming onto the streets last Thursday night, at a speed of 80 miles an hour. When they failed to stop as they neared the fig ranch, Sheriff Prince shot at the tires, hitting them and forcing the car to stop. Warning that the car had been stolen was given the Sheriff by phone. The car was stolen at Mesquite and the thieves, Bert William Sweet, 21, Mooresville, N. C. and Norman Lee Robinson, 19, Chase, Kansas, headed toward St. George. Prince and Adams met the car between here and Santa Clara, but failed to stop it. They then turned and followed it through this city to where the car was stopped. When the thieves brought the car to a stop they jumped out and started up the hill. By the time the officers were stopped (Continued on page eight) Car Thieves Arrested (Continued from first page) the boys were nearly to the top of the hill. Sheriff Prince reports re-ports that he called to them and told them to "stop or I'll shoot your legs off". They stopped immediately im-mediately and were taken into custody. They were confined in the Washington county jail until the U. S. Marshall came for them on Sept. 25th. A stolen car was recovered on Sept. 21st by the Sheriff's office. The car had been stolen on Aug. 9 th from David Gull in Spanish Fork. It was driven down here and abandoned about a mile off the highway in a canyon of the west mountains, reports Sheriff Prince. The car was discovered by a prospector who reported it to the Sheriff. An investigation was made with the result that the fact that it was a stolen car was discovered and the owner notified. |
