Show Governor Issues Call To Provide Army With Entertainment Features SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 9. Through the Civic clubs of Utah, where they are located, and to every Utah city, town or village vil-lage where there is a battery of the Utah National Guard, Governor Gov-ernor Herbert B. Maw this week has issued an appeal for the cooperation co-operation of citizens to provide amusement, entertainment, and recreation for all Utah service boys. He has appointed Lawrence A. Johnson .state housing director of the Utah State Council of Defense as chairman to provide recreational recre-ational facilities for Utah boys now located in California camps. He has appealed to citizens to provide the recreational facilities the boys need. - On his recent trip to San Luis Obispo camp of the Utah Guard and the Utah selectees, he found a dearth of amusement facilities in all battery headquarters. There was a need for pianos, phonographs, phono-graphs, radios, reading tables, writing desks, magazine and newspaper news-paper racks, newspapers, magazines, maga-zines, settees, occasional chairs and other conveniences which the boys had at home, but which are invaluable in the rigors of training train-ing camp activities. As a result, he has asked every one of the nineteen cities and towns which has a battery of soldiers at Camp San Luis Obispo to assume the responsibility to see that their battery headquarters, especially the recreation shack, be plentifully supplied with the necessary nec-essary equipment. Each headquarters needs phon-( phon-( Continued on page four) Governor Issues Call (Continued from first page) ograph, radio, piano, long reading tables, writing desks, or small tables for the same purpose, bridge tables, for- cards, magazine andj hwespapef racks, magazines, newspapers, news-papers, desks, straight-backed chairs, occasional tables, reference books and other equipment. To supply that need, he has asked Mr. Johnson to contact service clubs, women's clubs, citizen's citi-zen's clubs of all cities and towns in which batteries have been established. es-tablished. The equipment to be used need not be new. It must, however, be sturdy and in good condition. Donations may be made through local civic organizations and word of the donations be sent to Mr. Johnson, 207 South Main street, Salt Lake City. The equipment will be picked up in state trucks and forwarded to the service men at San Luis Obispo, a gift of the people from "home" who wish to let their service men and the world know that they appreciate the service of defense which has been rendered. |
