Show Attention Directed to Report on Dixie Winter Deer Census Under date of 32244 the Supervisor Super-visor of the Dixie National Forest has released the official report of the 1944 Winter Deer Census as prepared by Irwin H. Johnson, Forest Ranp-pr for thp Dixie Divi sion, and Oliver Stratton, Game Warden for the State Fish and Game Department. The report goes into considerable consider-able detail concerning the various phases of the count and some interesting trends in Deer Populations Popu-lations are brought out. The report, re-port, which may be, reviewed by anyone interested is on file with Lloyd E. McArthur, Sec'y of the St. George Federation of Sportsmen. Sports-men. Lack of space will not permit publication of the entire report but the final paragraphs are quoted herewith for the benefit of those interested in this problem. It was felt the 1943 post-season doe hunt was a fine thing to give much needed relief on winter range and should show some results this season on the Pine Valley Mountain summer range. It is recommended that checks on conditions be made this spring and summer so our information infor-mation will be complete and that any recommended doe removals be made on the basis of where problems exist rather than apply a blanket number to be removed over a large area. For example, it appears that future study and examination may show it desirable desir-able to recommend a small number num-ber of doe removals in the area east of Diamond Valley where it is generally agreed there are yet too many deer. This could be done in a post-season hunt. "Just how many antlerless deer it is recommended to remove in 1944 will have to wait upon further fur-ther studies of the range this spring and summer by the State Game Department, Forest Service and interested wildlife organizations." |
