Duard Millett, son of Mrs. Alvin Allred of Springdale was in St. George Saturday visiting friends and relatives prior to leaving leav-ing for Fort Lewis, Wash, where he will continue as instructor in demolition courses. After training in other activities, activ-ities, he was assigned several months ago to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in New England where he was recently graduated from the Demolition school with a special certificate. He has been home for a week and says he enjoyed assisting with the work such as he used to do before entering the service. Pa s Hurricane Sailor Home Irvin B. Schieffer of Hurricane was home recently on a five day leave after completing his boot training at San Diego, where he has been since Sept. 11. He has returned to San Diego for reassignment. reas-signment. Calling at the News office before leaving, he said the Navy is okeh and he is looking forward to sea duty. fa Pa Pa Completes Fiftieth Mission TSgt. John W. Booth, son of. William Booth of St. George, who is aerial gunner in a B-24 Liberator Libera-tor group, recently completed his fiftieth combat mission against the enemy from a base in Italy and is now home visiting his parents. par-ents. He has participated in bombing attacks against some of the most heavily defended enemy installations installa-tions in Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Romania and the Balkans. He holds the Air Medal with three bronze Oak Leaf clusters for meritirious achievement. He has been in military mili-tary service since October, 1942 and had his training in aviation mechanics at Curtis Wright Institute In-stitute in Glendale, Calif, and in aerial gunnery at Harlingen, Texas. S Official Lid Off Now that the official lid is off, Layne W. Jepson S 1c of Hurricane, Hurri-cane, says he's allowed to tell his folks what he has been doing in the invasion of the Phillippines. He says, "We fairly well gave those Nips H Just when we thought we had our part of the invasion finished and were almost ready to leave, the Jap fleet came out ana i mean came out. it was just what we'd been begging for, for a long time." He admits their final show up somewhat of a surprise and says they were probably "laughing up their sleeves and thought they had us hopelessly outnumbered. But instead of running as they expected us to do, we attacked with torpedoes, bombshell fire and everything we had and sure gave them a good shellacing." He's proud to be . in the Navy and especially proud of his ship, which has participated in two big invasions, including the biggest sea battle in history. He says, "I saw "more team work in one day than most people will see in a lifetime. We were all so scared that if we hadn't been working so hard and fast, I think some of us would have passed out. I don't know what is coming up next, but I am well and game for it." rss pa fa Conference In the Marianas Hundreds of young men of the L. D. S. church and their military associates assembled in a chapel somewhere in the Marianas Sunday, Sun-day, Oct. 29, to hold an L. D. S. conference. Practically all of the states in the union werp rpnrp- sented at this unusual conference, reports Pfc. Buryl E. Lee of Virgin, Utah who was in attendance attend-ance and sent his parents a copy of the program. On the program was an organ prelude by Sgt. Erickson; hymn, "God Be With You"; benediction, bene-diction, Lt. Col. Elvin T. Way-ment Way-ment and organ postlude by Sgt. Drendall. SSgt Ashton Visits SSgt. Wilford Ashton arrived Monday to spend six days in Hurricane Hur-ricane with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Ashton. He came from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. and will return to Camp Wheeler, Ga. to continue his training. Dec. 3, will mark 25 months of service for this Hurricane boy. During the past year he has trained train-ed in radio controls with the air target unit. He gives fine reports of the training center and says 11 others from this area are in his unit, including T5 Wirth Bullock Bul-lock of Cedar City. MAM Graduates Eldon Clave Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clave D. Walker, of Hurricane Hur-ricane has successfully completed his flight training at the Army Air force advanced flying school, Luke Field, Arizona. Graduating Nov. 20, 1944, he received his silver wings and designation as Flight Officer in the Army of the United States. FO Walker was among the top high scorers in aerial gunnery in his class. |
