Show Hon Livestockmen Ask Protection Ot Park Grazing Rights Question of Protection Was Discussed at Meeting Last Summer; All Interests for It, If Stockmen Protected Protection or the stockmen who have glazing tights in Zion Na-! Na-! ticnai Park area, which is to ; lie taken over by the government, govern-ment, is seen in i'i? letter received re-ceived by Wayne Gardner, chairman chair-man of the Utah Gracing district dis-trict No. 4. 'Word of the reeog-I reeog-I uition of the rights cf the stock- men by the government was sent j Mr. Gardner by J. Q. Peterson, regional giazer. I The question of the continuation continu-ation of their grazing rights came up at a meeting of the stockmen, civic organizations and Park ( Service officials last summer when 1' it was suggested by the Park of-lt of-lt ficials that the government ex-J ex-J tend Zion Park. At that time the r groups present agreed to the i move providing the stockmen j were protected in their grazing i rights. j The following information is taken from a letter addressed to Mr. Gardner: The National Park Service lias received Mr. Julian Terrett's letter of October 27, regarding grazing problems in the proposed Zion Xational monument. "It is the general policy of this Service to recognize ' existing grazing rights in areas which are being established as national parks and monuments, and we j shall be glad to see that graz-i graz-i ing problems in this area are ; worked out with the local advis-' advis-' ory board of Utah Grazing dis-E dis-E trict, if and when they are in- eluded in a national monument." " From this letter it appears that the -attitude of the Xational Parks Service is broad enough to eliminate elim-inate any proper protection o! the livestock unit involving grazing graz-ing within a proposed national .monument, said Mr. Gardner. |
