For many y-ars Malcom was a prosperous, progressive town, and .still s. For many years Malcom Mal-com had a newspaper and a good one. It was puhllshed and edited hy Mr. K. It. Doty. He produced not only a Kood newspaper hut a prosperous one. It supplied the revenue that enabled him and Mrs. holy to live in comfort and educate a large family of children. I'nder Mr. Duty's direction the newspaper enjoyed an excellent circulation coverage of the town and its surrounding farms. Its content provided a coverage of the local news of the community and also a liberal amount of high quality features, Including interpretations inter-pretations of national and world events, good (let ion and popular departments. It was the satisfying satisfy-ing kind of a newspaper that lilled the newspaper needs of the people and left no place rfor an extensive circulation of outside publications. The result was' that the business busi-ness that belonged in Malcom was not attracted away from the town, and the merchants and the town were prosperous. Then, Mr, Doty having competence, and feeling feel-ing that he had earned a rest, sold the paper. The new owner did not bolieve, I am told, in providing anything more than local news, and not too much of that. He cut down on the quality, qual-ity, the variety and the quantity the newspaper had been providing. provid-ing. People began taking other papers and these papers carried the advertising of merchants outside out-side of Malcom. This advertising advertis-ing attracted business away from Malcom. Within twp years after Mr. Doty sold his paper it was through, but that was not all. Several business houses had closed clos-ed because of the trade that had been attracted away from the town, and the bank just closed up all it'or the lack of a GOOD newspaper. Now the business men of Malcom Mal-com have got together all of them and are out to rejuvenate the town. While a new bank and some new business houses have been arranged for, one of the things that is most greatly desired de-sired is a newspaper. But the business men insist it must be a good newspaper if it is to receive re-ceive support in the way of subscriptions sub-scriptions and advertising. Malcom is twelve miles southeast south-east of Grinnell, Iowa, and has been an incorporated town since 1872. The newspaper, the Malcom Mal-com Leader, was started in 1877 and was continued until late last fall, when it closed up and the plant was moved out of town. Evidently here is an opportunity opportun-ity for a real publisher who can and will produce a real newspaper. news-paper. Publishers Auxiliary. |
