Show u PUBLICATION OF LEGALS Every once in a while someone arises to ask why the law requires legal publication of ordinances and other legal actions. Eager to economize, such questioneers want to be assured there is something to be gained by the publication. The matter of the motive in the newspapers for legal actions is very old in this country. It is a part of the democratic demo-cratic movement. There is no better check on legislative bodies and legal activities than public knowledge. The public pub-lic is entitled to know of things done that concern it. That being the case, what better way can information be passed to the public than by the use of newspapers? In an community the newspaper reaches more people than any other organization. People look for current information infor-mation to the newspapers and that is where they get it. Interests, In-terests, some of them sinster, are seeking continually to do away with the necessity of publication in the papers. If the notice can be stuck on a barn door, telephone, or fence post where it is unlikely to be seen it is preferred by them. Newspaper publication protects as well as informs the public of what is doing and what has been done. o |
