Show St. George First To Adopt Numbering System; Honor Seen Kansas City, Missouri Has Adopted the Same System; Considerable Time, Money Required for Project Honor for St. George, as the first city to establish the system of numbering which has been installed on the streets and homes of this city, i3 seen by Richard R. Lyman, resident of the European Euro-pean Mission and consulting engineer. en-gineer. Mr. Lyman devised the system that is being used here and which h3S received the recommendation rec-ommendation of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Kansas City, Missouri has also adopted this system of numbering number-ing and other cities and towns throughout the nation are contemplating con-templating its use, according to reports received by Mrs. Vivian "Woodbury and Mrs. Helen Reich-' Reich-' maun. It was during the time that Mis. Woodbury was the president of the Chamber of Commerce Auxilliary tihat the project of getting the street signs up and the houses numbered was first started. Due to a lack of finances and time, this group were unable to complete the work i so they passed their nLaxcKpud-1 nLaxcKpud-1 plans on to thext group of c officers which ,'fhad Mrs. Reieh-"mann Reieh-"mann as president. Mrs. Woodbury Wood-bury was asked to continue working work-ing on the project and the group under Mrs. Reichmann also accepted ac-cepted the project as their main one for the year. Again a lack of finance and other problem! delayed de-layed the project and this group l;i"p' Ma1 jvict on m tbp prsent organization. At the present time all i the street signs are up and tl city has been mapped for nuibers and a great many people and business houses have puriased ' and installed them. When Mr. Lyman was informed ot the work done here he wrot the following letter congratulating the women on their work and informing them that this city was the first to adopt the plan. He is desirous of receivinj fur-' tber information and pictures so tbat the information may be passed on to the American Society So-ciety of Civil Engineers. ' Writes Letter Following is the letter written 1)y Mr. Lyman: Mrs. Vivien Woodbury & Mrs. Wilford J. Reichmann St. George, Utah U. S. A. Dear efficient fellow-worken for . . the public good: In the mail yesterday came a clipping from "St. George, November No-vember ISth", advising that under un-der your efficient direction "every street iu St. George is numbered". I have said many times during dur-ing my service as a public speaker speak-er that "men may fail but women never". I remember with great clearness clear-ness the very interesting visit I had from Mrs. Woodbury Sometime Some-time ago when the matter of numbering your streets waj discussed. dis-cussed. 1 am sending you inclosed herewith here-with a reprint showing some; road signs in Salt Lake county also in Los Angeles. You win be interested in knowing that Kansas Kan-sas City, Missouri, also has adopted adop-ted this plan of numbering the streets. j It it is reasonably conicuient for you to do so I would be glad for you to take a picture of one ot your street signs so tlut the street numbers in both direction direc-tion can be read.
