Show TRIO BREAK WAY 00T OF C00NT1 JAIL Eighteen-IIour Flight in Blizzard Bliz-zard Ended Tuesday Afternoon Af-ternoon With Arrest of Fugitives at Mesquite A desperate jail break and an eighteen-hour tramp through a raging blizzard ended at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, when Brig-ham Brig-ham Hardy, Clark coun ty deputy sheriff of Mesquite, Nevada, arrested W. E. Lane and Warden B. Spinks, alleged car thieves, and Villars Van Bus-kurk, Bus-kurk, rum-runner partner of R. E. AVilson, who killed himself here last August. When apprehended, the party was in possession of .3S revolver, revol-ver, which, in the opinion of Washington county officers, was smuggled into jail by a friend within the past few weeks. The group broke out of jail about 10:30 Monday night by prying off two planks in the floor with an automobile spring leaf that had been used for breaking up firewood. They avoided av-oided the lighted business section sec-tion by sneaking through the alley at the rear cf the business houses on First North street, and came onto the highway a short distance west of the intersection of First North and Main street. According to Buskurk, the men passed within ten feet of Fred Ward, nightwatchman, who failed to recognize them. They were seen to pass William Prince's service station about 11 p. m. At a shack near the Indian reservation, used during the summer sum-mer for a fruit stand, they stopped stop-ped and built a fire to warm themselves, then continued on south. Buskurk was wearing only light oxfords, and his feet frequently fre-quently became cold and tired from walking. He had been in jail since August and was unaccustomed un-accustomed to exorcise. They passed the service station at the summit of the Beaver Dam mountains at daylight, during a blinding snowstorm with a heavy wind. On the other side of the mountain they stopped at a cabin formerly used by a highway construction con-struction gang, where they found wood for a fire. About five miles from Mesquite they were picked up by a truck and taken to that town and were immediately arrested and lodged in jail awaiting await-ing the arrival of Washington county officers. Buskurk was serving the fourth month of a six-month sentence sen-tence for illegal transportation of liquor, which he declared was his first offense. He would have been released in February, but the escapade of Monday night will undoubtedly result in his transfer to the state pen to serve time for jail breaking, according ac-cording to officers. Lane and Spinks both have prison records, the former now being on parole from the Washington Wash-ington Ktate penitentiary. They have demanded a jury trial on grand larceny charge which will probably be held the fore part of next week. Orval Hafen has been appointed to represent the |
