In the contest at Enterprise three students papers were selected select-ed and the following one by Hor-tense Hor-tense Hunt was chosen to be published in the News. The Value of Quarantine to Humanity Ily Hortonse Hunt, Enterprise The values of quarantine to humanity are unlimited. If contagious con-tagious diseases are quarantined or isolated the germs of these diseases may eventually die out. This has been proven by the great reduction of the malarial and yellow fever germs. A few years ago thousands of people were killed by these raging diseases; dis-eases; today very few cases appear ap-pear and these are guarded with the greatest of precautions. With a greater decrease in contageous diseases, the citizen-iship citizen-iship of the country will be great-j great-j ly increased. The result will be I a better healthier, and wealthier ' ration. People will not have an fxtra cost of hospital and doctor bills to be drawn from their already al-ready jneager allowances; more men will be on the job instead of at home nursing some form of diseafe. Each individual can help in the campaign o:' health by observing the laws of quarantine and isolation. isola-tion. The nation, state and community, com-munity, though they are great j forces in the prevention of dis-j dis-j ease, can do little f"r a healthy I nation without the support of the individual. Quarantine is international. Inspection reports are sent to government officials on the health of the passengers ' and crew aboard. If the ship has ' been detained because of con- 1 tagious diseases, every part of ') the vessel, as well as the cargo, J , is. disinfected before it can pro-: ; ceed to its warf. j General government regulations j ' provide for protection of a coun-! i try as a whole; each smaller pol- , itical division down to the muni icipality takes steps to defend itself individually against infec-' infec-' tious. diseases. , The state charges special fees . and authorizes the acts of quar-; quar-; antine officers. These are elected elect-ed so that detention and dlsin-' dlsin-' fection of premises and posses-! posses-! sions are compulsory. No part of the organization of t a community government is of more importance than the health J department. Through this organ-- organ-- ization people with communica-. communica-. ble diseases can be quarantined t or isolated. There are also spec- ial sanatoriums for the isolation ' of such dangerous contagious dis-r dis-r eases. It is up to the individual to t keep the nation healthy. To do 1 this two things are necessary; j first we should have a knowledge r r-" : : . - about disease, and avoid l: essary exposure to the contar ones; second we should be i ing to make the matter of pf: al health of so much imporj that we will take the use of money necessary to well. |
