Show CONFERENCE (Continued from page 1) . Vocal trio, "I Love a Little Cottage", Cot-tage", Mrs. Mamie Paxman. Mrs. Lillian Morrison and Miss Lucille Worthen. President Anthony W. Ivins said: "I appreciate this opportunity of coming to St. George and enjoying the spirit of Dixie. I believe I know something of it because I have known Dixie from the very beginning and know the people. Knowing the courage and the sacrifices sac-rifices made in making it so productive. pro-ductive. I have not come down with the- expectation of speaking long sermons, . but just going back over this long trail and following it up. Some of Dixie's dreams have been realized, others have not, but I am sure that they all will be. "I have- been thinking of just that ever since I left home. Since the meeting at Leeds many incidents, inci-dents, many thoughts and words have come to my mind of the old Dixie. Every place that we pass, on the road, that I traveled 59 years ago, there is some associa- I ticn and incident that enshrines! that spot. I remember when I j went to Salt Lake City just after my marriage and we loaded a load j of dried peaches and started for the city. We went up and sold i these peaches to buy a stove and j then we came back. It was an ideal honeymoon. Since that time we have come that same road in an automobile but I think we never enjoyed it any more. I would rather come to Dixie and on out to Mt. Trumbull much more than I would like to go to New York." Vocal duet, "A Dream of Paradise", Para-dise", Mona Reber and Mary McGregor. Mc-Gregor. President- Heber J. Grant said: "It is a decided pleasure to be present on this occasion and I have most thoroughly enjoyed the testimonies from the representatives representa-tives of our auxiliary organizations. organiza-tions. I rejoice in the wonderful Work 'they are accomplishing. I desire de-sire to emphasize . with all my ability that faith is the thing for Latter-Day Saints to have. Faith is a gift of God and we must know that faith is far better than knowledge. The knowledge of the world on many subjects is not knowledge, it is theory. Everyone should read the Book of Mormon. There is nothing in that book that is not uplifting. It is a sacred history his-tory of the forefathers of the American Indians. "It will be 50 years ago on the first day of November since I have been called to a place of responsibility respon-sibility in this church and I have never weakened in my testimony of the Book of Mormon. I have had evidence after evidence come to me that has caused me . to go get all the knowledge I could. Bead all the books you can, but read the kind of books that are for your benefit and do not swallow everything you read. Choir, "As the Dew from Heaven Heav-en Distilling." Sunday Afternoon Session Chorus, "O Home Beloved." Prayer, Gordon Hyde, bishop of the Ensign Ward, Salt Lake City. Vocal solo, Dilworth Snow. The stake presidency, composed of Jos. K. Nicholes, W. O. Bent-ley Bent-ley and Walter Cannon were released. re-leased. The following were sustained: sus-tained: W. O. Bentley, president; Wliford W. McArthur, first counselor, coun-selor, and Orval Hafen, second counselor. W. O. Bentley said: "This is indeed in-deed a surprise. I would desire to be associated with these men as long as I was part of the presidency, presi-dency, tout it is otherwise. I wish that I could give my entire time to this work as I have some idea ! of what work is connected with it and I know I could easily spend my whole time and still have plenty plen-ty to do. "I assure you I appreciate this manifestation of your support and we will do everything in our power pow-er to measure up to your expectations, expec-tations, to serve you. I feel that I have few of the qualifications to fill this important position, but I respond to the call and want your confidence and respect." W. W. McArthur and Orval K. Hafen also responded with brief talks. Jos. K. Nicholes said: "I would feel very much at a loss to know what to do if I thought I was leaving the people here and their problems in this release because there is no other place where I have my home or my interests. I was not born in Dixie, but I am very happy to be one of you. I am thankful to have served you as well as I have and I recognize that I have made a lot of mistakes. I appreciate your confidence and the blessings you have caused to be given me. I have come to respect in the highest high-est terms that are possible President Presi-dent W. O. Bentley and I am thankful that he is president of the St. George stake. I have believed be-lieved for some time that the positions po-sitions which I have occupied prior to this meeting should be occupied by two men, so I am thankful for this meeting today that these changes could be made." Vocal duet, Mrs. Lillian Morrison Mor-rison and Miss -Lucille Worthen. President E. H. Snow said in part: 'T was impressed yesterday afternoon af-ternoon with what President Iv-tas Iv-tas said about faith. There is nothing like faith in God. For if what we believe is true it is the greatest message there is, The greatest knowledge we can have in our lives and that is that we know the gospel is true, and our destiny is eternal life. "It is a faith that will not yield to the mercenary challenge of skepticism and to doubt, but will hold on in faith that God will justify his case to man. If we can impress this upon our children we have given them the greatest heritage we can give." President Anthony W. Ivins in his talk said: "I awakened this morning early, before it was light. I walked to the cemetery and walked about in the streets of that silent city of the dead. There I found on the tombstones nearly all the names of the men and women I knew in my early life. . I thought of these men and women as I knew them. I knew the sacrifices they had made for an ideal, an ideal which brought them here, an ideal which they lived for. They had been my teachers. I thought of these things there in the gray dawn in that white city and I thanked God that my lot had been cast with this group of wor.-derful wor.-derful men and I knew that if I were true to their teachings that that hope of mine would be realized real-ized and I would be with them and know them as I was with them and knew them in mortal life. "The temple illuminated the town and the sight was wonderful. wonder-ful. Just then a great bus hurried hur-ried by me and I knew that I was still in the world of human life. I thought what a place of beauty this is and what a picture it would make if only an artist could paint it as it appeared ap-peared to me this morning. We have hard problems to face, but we are in a position to meet them." Vocal solo, George Lytle. President Heber J. Grant said: "I do not believe this will be the last time I will come to St. George but I am trying to go to a different dif-ferent place each Sunday. I felt it was not necessary to come this i time, but President Ivins insisted j and I am glad he did. There is, naturally, a very warm place in j my heart for the people of Dixie. I believe in proportion to the j population of this place with any j other, more leading men have come from here than from any other. I endorse the splendid tribute tri-bute paid to the Spirit of Dixie by Oscar Kirkham. I have listened listen-ed with interest to the splendid music and I recall in all of my visits to St. George that I have always been impressed with the musical and - dramatic ability and in the accomplishments shown by the people here. "It is five years since I was here 5nd ten years before I may come again, so I say that I am I proud of the fact that I am a Latter-Day Saint. I rejoice in the records that are being made by our people." Chorus, "God Bless Our Mountain Moun-tain Home." Prayer, Claud Hirschi. |
