Show LILLIAN WHITE fun fun- funeral eral held Saturday Final inal Rites Saturday honor I Vernal Pioneer Funeral services were held Saturday for Mrs Lillian B Ward White at Kingsbury Congregational Church She died at her home in Vernal Wednesday following a long leng illness THE SERVICES were con con- conducted conducted ducted by the R Rev v George Harcus Mrs Bart Highland sang Abide With Me Mc and In the Garden Lead Me Gently Home a quartet was sung by Louise Caldwell Eva Hatch Boyd Price and Chel Chel- Chel Chellus lus Ius Caldwell Graveside services were conducted by Rebecca Lodge No 23 and dedication of the grave was by Reverend Har- Har Harcus Harcus cus Pallbearers were Thomas Herbert Glenn Murray Ward Merkley Amos Merkley A D and James Purdy MRS WHITE one of the early pioneers came to Ash Ash- Ashley Icy ley Valley in 1881 She was born March 17 1872 in Hills Hills- Hillsdale Hillsdale dale Iowa a daughter of Me- Me Melissa Melissa lissa Graves and Wilbur Car Car- Carlton Carlton Britt Her mother mothel died when she was five years of age and she lived with her grandparents until she came west at the age of nine to be with her father Mrs White and her sister Gertie were put on the train in care of the conductor to come west They each had a abrass abrass brass tag around their necks with their names and their fathers name They were met metat metat at Green River Wyoming by their father and a group of freighters Chellus Lee and Iowa Hall John Blankenship Joseph Hardy and George Perry They arrived in Ashley Valley November 2 1881 HER FATHER had come to Utah in May 1876 prospect prospect- prospecting prospecting ing for gold He had been eq en a map by an old prospector prospector tor who claimed there was a arich arich rich gold mine near Carter Creek In the company of Fin Fin- Finlay Finlay lay Britt and Peter Dillman he prospected that area until fall Finding no gold he came over the mountain into Ash Ash- Ashley Ashley ley Valley then on to White White- Whiterocks Whiterocks rocks and lived with Captain Dodds that winter In the spring of 1877 1677 he returned to Ashley Valley built a home and sent for his two daugh- daugh daughters daughters They were very proud of 01 their new home It was the first home in the area to have shingles The shingles had been brought from Heber by wagon and team An organ was al also o brought to the Britt home from Heber and every one gathered at their home to have singing practice Kate Ashton Brown was the organ 1st DURING THE early years in the valley the people had many Indian scares and the settlers gathered in the base base- basement ment of the Britt store for protection Mr Britt had had one year in medical school therefore he was the town doctor dentist and druggist and was often called out to help the sick All the medical supplies and provisions had to tobe tobe be brought over Diamond Mountain from Green River Wyo Mr Britt was also the first school teacher In 1885 the Britt family moved to Ft t Duchesne where they operated a hotel Mrs White lived JIved there until 1890 when she married Warren Pierce White Mr White had come to Ft Duchesne with the mechanics carpenters masons and plasterers from Omaha Nebraska to build U S Army officers quarters at atthe atthe the fort After their marriage the couple moved to Salt Lake City and later to Logan Utah returning to Vernal In 1894 Mr and Mrs White were the parents of twelve children Mr White died In 1942 Mrs White was a charter member of the Kingsbury I Congregational Church and of I the Ladies AId a member of the Thalia Club the Rebecca Rebeccac Lodge c No 23 past of the American Legion Auxiliary and Registrar of Vital Statistics for 32 years She is survived by 13 grandchildren 12 great grand children and six children Bertha White Austin White and Iras Schwabe of Vernal Eva Shaw of Ellensburg Wash Wilbur White Taco Taco- Tacoma ma Wash and Norma Hale of Reno Nevada Burial was in the Maeser Fairview C Cemetery |
